I don't know about in the ring, he's good at what he does, but I think that's more Manny's abilities than his own, and against Fury he looked really unable to adapt.Cygnus475 wrote:If you mean inside the ring (which is what actually matters to us fans) ring iq, strategy, etc:

That was like the first time in like 8 years he was unable to adapt at the age of 39. More title defenses than anyone except Louis and Holmes. He rarely fought guys over 6'5 because they hardly exist--especially in boxing.BitPlayer wrote:I don't know about in the ring, he's good at what he does, but I think that's more Manny's abilities than his own, and against Fury he looked really unable to adapt.Cygnus475 wrote:If you mean inside the ring (which is what actually matters to us fans) ring iq, strategy, etc:

Getting degrees don't always mean you are the most intelligent, and has nothing to do with boxing IQ.

Lomachenko plays with his opponents like a cat. Have to go for him as most intelligent. Usyk is pretty special too. Mayweather of course - but still retired. There are others who are very sharp but I choose those two. Sweet Science.

It seems that there are an awful lot of forum members that have a lot of love for Demetrius, but the man has only competed four times in more than three years and eight months, against mainly anonymous second-tier opposition, apart from Vanes Martirosyan.Cygnus475 wrote:If you mean inside the ring (which is what actually matters to us fans) ring iq, strategy, etc:

I'm not suggesting that Andrade is rubbish or anything like that, but I haven't seen anything particularly remarkable about the man. I need to keep my eye on him, because I might not have picked-up on something.

Re: The most intelligent active boxer ?
As far as ring IQ, Cubans have a history of being well-schooled fighters and I think Rigondeaux and Luis Ortiz are quite skilled in the mental game. Anthony Joshua would be another. If I had to pick just one it would be Rigo.
Re: The most intelligent active boxer ?
That's not true. He didn't need to adapt against any of the others. Even against Haye he showed no plan B.Cygnus475 wrote:That was like the first time in like 8 years he was unable to adapt at the age of 39. More title defenses than anyone except Louis and Holmes. You respond with "he didn't need to adapt"
Uh, duh. Exactly. What he did worked. Fury was the first one to really take him out his comfort zone.
Re: The most intelligent active boxer ?
I've never really thought that having a degree is a mark of intelligence. Rather just, a person that has been educated in a specific area, (usually to do a job in that area).
I think most people can tell the difference between an intelligent and unintelligent person within a quick 5 min conversation, or by simply listening to how they talk and what they speak about.
Nathan Cleverly
Carl Frampton
I guess these two, when the talk, always come across as smart guys.

I'm 100% serious when I say this. Tyson Fury is an extremely intelligent, if not well educated, young man.
Re: The most intelligent active boxer ?
As far as ring IQ goes ... we've got the smartest crop of boxers right now that I've ever seen in any one period.
Lomachenko is probably the smartest.. Golovkin is damned smart.. Joshua is one of the brainiest Heavyweights I've ever seen with 17 fights.. Oleksandr Usyk is a damned smart boxer with only 10 pro fights.. Ward is real smart and so is Kovalev -- so their fight will be a great battle of wits.. David Haye is damned smart.. Crawford, Thurman, Spence, Eubank, Gary Russell, Mikey Garcia, Luis Ortiz, Povetkin, Easter, Brook, and Jack can all think well in there.. Wladimir Klitschko has a very high intellect but it didn't translate into a clever ring IQ.. His skills came at a high cost and a lot of effort.. He had great determination to succeed and that's much more important than raw talent.. He's a smart businessman.
Many boxers have natural ring cleverness, but are stupid in life... Tyson Fury is a clever boxer.. He's an example of somebody who had everything dropped in his lap and he's determined to screw it up by not working hard... Luis Ortiz, Guillermo Rigondeaux, and Erislandy Lara could do a lot better if they learned to speak English... They've had a lot of years to learn it - and enough funds to get it going.. I admire the Klitschkos because they gained a passable understanding of German and English very quickly.. They could communicate well in a lot of countries and that helped them out a lot.. There's a more to success in Boxing than being a maestro of pugilism.

Agree with this, we have an intelligent crop of fighters today. Ring IQ is noticeable with all the names you mentioned. I think Rigandeaux could be in there as well.Kalan wrote:As far as ring IQ goes ... we've got the smartest crop of boxers right now that I've ever seen in any one period.

I like Wlad but your argument seems to work against him (I know that's not what you meant though).Cygnus475 wrote:That was like the first time in like 8 years he was unable to adapt at the age of 39. If he's bigger than most of the fighters he fought, he is good because of size more than anything else.
He does have exceptional intelligence in & out of the ring though. I just think that age + Fury's style got him.

He totally ignore mandatory defenses, titles, WBACFGwhatever organisations. He was in control about gloves, referees, weights. He was lord of his career. He make millions from people who loves him and even more millions from people that hates him. Dumb person cannot do that. PS: sorry for my poor english

most ring intelligence.
most ring intelligence.
Re: The most intelligent active boxer ?
I should clarify. He didn't need to adapt against the others in order to win. He would have had a more enjoyable night against Haye if he could have adapted. Wlad has never been versatile. It's just that what he does almost always works.Cygnus475 wrote:I said that was the first time in 8 years he was unable to adapt.Asterix wrote:That's not true.
