Genuine question. ... Wladamir / Vladamir

Post by Wales »

I see a lot of people continually referring to Wladamir Klitchko as Vladamir. Is this a mistake or am I missing something? I know his birth name is Volodymyr, but what's with the insistence on calling him Vladamir or Vlad?

Nobody calls him Wladamir or Vladamir. It is either Vladimir (Russian spelling with English letters) or Wladimir (his "official" name). Not sure where Wladimir came from, as Ukranian spelling is Volodymyr.

Any Boxing publication or rankings list or TV network that airs his fights spells it Wladimir. So it'll always be Wladimir to me.

So, Volodymyr is the English translation of his birth name which originally was written using Russian letters (alphabet). Whilst Vladimir is his birth name in Russian but using English letters. However, he decided to call himself Wladimir.

Got it.

Transcribed from the Cyrillic alphabet to English it would be better written Vladimir but the convention has established it as Wladimir, the w being pronounced v as in German. The original: Влади́мир. The B is pronounced v in Cyrillic. The next letter is L. A is the same. The next letter is D in English. And so on...Vlahdeemeer...Wladimir. Хорошо?

My theory used to be Vlad K. and Vit K. was just too confusing, so it was switched to Wlad. :maybe:

In german his name is Waldemar which is why he used the "W"to make Wladimir sound more German.

You can call him either Wladimir, or Volodymyr which is his legal name.

Wladimir - german transliteration of russian name Владимир, Vladimir - english transliteration of russian name Владимир, Volodymyr - ukrainian version of russian name Vladimir (rus. Владимир - ukr. Володимир)

In all the years I have known about Klitschko, I have never seen anybody refer to him as Wladamir or Vladamir.

Most of the time, he gets referred to as Wlad, but most people seem to be able to spell his name correctly if they give him his full title.
