Spent the weekend in Llandudno and so visited the Randy Turpin bar.

Some good fight posters, statues, information and film of fights.

Anyone been there? Quite an odd feeling, sat there enjoying a pint in a building that celebrates the life of a person whose life was shortened due to his ownership of said building.

Just ordered the book on him and Freddie Mills. Want to know more about that post war era.

Never been but just reminded me of a chap I used to work with, said that he sparred Turpin, Thinking he was doing alright in the first round, then in the second round got his ass owned to him, as Turpin just wanted to see what he had in the first.

2 miles from me. In his hey day he also had Gwrych castle some 10 miles from Llandudno. They had a Turpin tribute day few weeks back

Lots of local amateurs from clubs in Llandudno and locally went and boxed exhibitions there too

Can drive straight up to it, take a tram from the town up to it, or walk from the town up (mile maximum ). Personally think it's easy to get to, but don't find it makes most of what it is. There's few posters and pics, but that's it. The staff there don't know anything beyond fact Randolph Turpin once owned the place and fought SRR, the pub itself is crap, beer poor and dont serve food (from memory if they do its poor).
Compare it to the first pub you arrive at on way down Snowdon (tallest mountain in Wales about 30 miles away). They've really made an effort to make it a "must stop" kinda place . The summit (turpins) is more walk in see photos walk out

What they don't tell you is Turpin bought the pub after he retired, it didn't work, he went bankrupt three or four years later and attempted to kill his four year old daughter then succeed in killing himself. Think he shot the 4yr old then himself. She survived he didn't.

It's nothing but a cold lifeless place I think, one fight in a loop all day long, staff are clueless too, but can't blame them only after a bit of money I suppose, you can't help but think they could make a lot more of it

I have been twice.
In 2013 it was a really cosy place, all oak furniture and the place was covered in memorabillia.
However, I went back in 2016 and the place was painted all in white and most of the memorabillia had been took down.
Found it sad really. Turpin was took advantage of big time.
Don't belive all that you hear about him shooting himself. Load of bollocks.
He was murderd by former "associates" for asking for money that should have been paid to him for his fights ten years previous.
It is a commonly held belief that JS had him popped off.
