Usyk could become a heavyweight champion

Post by actjac »

As a former Olympic Gold Medalist at 6'-3" and a southpaw this new world Cruiserweight champion could threaten Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder even now.. . .A future fight (if properly built up) with Anthony Joshua could be a super fight someday.

Yes he could. Usyk beat Beterbiev, who himself beat Kovalev in the amateurs, in the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships, both fighting as heavyweights.

Not by beating the unspectacular Glowack and only having 10 fights right now... He probably entered the ring at 215 but he's still too small to truck with the top Heavyweights... He's a great cruiserweight and should try to put a stamp on that division.. Nobody really has done that yet..

He will probably take bad advice and try to fight Heavyweight like Holyfield and Haye did---but I don't think he'll take a title because he's too small to get in there with Joshua, Ortiz, or Fury... He's used to being the taller man in there and that would change dramatically.

Maybe, stilll green but looked a talent. Needs to add weight without losing his handspeed and even though Glowacki has a good chin i think Usyk's power is questionable, he hit the pole with the kitchen sink last night and barely rocked him.

So he could beat Wilder and FUry who both, albeit with some issues, have dealt with small slick opponents, and Fury has improved considerably since, but Joshua who's only real opponents have been slow and sloppy but tough is the one he'd have most issues with.

Head to head between the top ones are interesting but for a small guy Fury is the worst one you could fight, the biggest, fast, and best at using his height other than maybe Wlad.

Yes, I believe that he could become HW champion, even the undisputed one. I consider him as a top 5 HW just now, if he move up.

Could? I'd like to see how he does against a guy 220 or 240 in non title fights even against journeyman opposition.

Not now, and unlikely ever. Certainly never the undisputed heavyweight champ that's for sure.
Why not let him clean out the cruisers first before starting such talk? I could understand it if he dominated a supreme talent last night. There's plenty of crusierweight fights for him to have first before thinking about moving up.

Usyk could potentially beat a top 5 heavyweight like Huck did. But he can't f*ck with the man who beat Wladimir.

I agree.

Chagaev and Ibragimov were in the same weight class in the amateurs, ad put on some weight to fight as a professional heavyweight. Usyk is taller than either and has a listed 78" reach. As an amateur Usyk sparred and did well vs the super heavyweights.

With the division fragmented, I think he could win one of the belts.

I agree that he definitely has the potential to target and capture one of the HW belts. The chances of him unifying are remote.

I think the top few guys would be too much for him, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he became a top ten fighter and beat people like Parker and Pulev. He had some SHW fights in the amateurs and dominated good fighters like 2016 Olympic silver medalist Joe Joyce and 2011 world champion Magomed Medzhidov.

He's 29, only had 10 fights, just won his first world title. I think he should attempt to unify the Cruiserweight division, give him another 10 fights, maybe 2-4 years. then he will be more experienced as a pro, aged 33 he can move up and fight HW

I want him to stick around at CW too for at least a few more years too. I think he can prove himself to be the best CW since Holyfield...

Yes...I think Haye is overrated.

He has little depth on his record at the weight, and while people make it out like he breezed through the division he actually had tough fights with Fragomeni and Mormeck, with the latter having him all over the place at times. Of course he was also stopped by Thompson and heavily floored by super middleweight Mock, but I'll give him a pass since those happened early in his career.

Haye is 6'3" X 230 of late... He's added a lot of strength while retaining his speed---but he's getting old and seems to be wasting his time.

Usyk is already 29.. That's not young for somebody with 10 fights, so he can't sit around.. If he fought 4 times a year -- which is very possible with real good matchmakers and promoters -- he could easily get 12 Title Defenses in by the time he's 32.. He'd have over 20 fights and then he could attack the Heavyweight ranks after cleaning out the Cruisers.. The problem comes with sitting around and waiting for fights with guys who aren't reasonable and don't really want to fight you.. You spend all your time working on fights that aren't happening and end up fighting twice a year at the most, looking only for the big fights.. It's better just to stay busy and fight the fights and fighters who are available.
