If this happened when it was originally supposed to a few years ago, I'd have gone for Cleverly decision. Unfortunately, I now think it will be Braehmer decision.

Very hard to predict what you'll get out of cleverly these days. He looked a shell against bellew but put up a valiant effort vs fonfara. Top it it off with his retirement talk and inactivity and it's hard to gauge what version of him shows up. If he comes in top shop I think the fight is his for the taking.

doesn't help him that his coach is just his mate who happens to be a fitness trainer

I think Braehmer is somewhat underrated and always has been due to his inclination to go for easy (easier) fights. I don't know if this is due to a lack of belief in himself or just because if he can make good money fighting relative cans, then why fight tougher opposition for more brain damage when he makes a good living not needing to do that.

Braehmer is technically decent and has a good boxing IQ- he's not a huge puncher but has decent enough power. He's definietly a superior 'boxer' to Cleverly. I always found it bizarre when I read people saying if only Cleverly had used his boxing skills against Kovalev or if he 'boxed' against Fonfara he would make it easy.

I honestly don't see what those people are seeing when they say/said that. To me Cleverly has never been particularly skilled. He's just had a great work rate and stamina and threw a lot of punches. He also had a decent chin prior to being stopped by Kovalev.

He was never particularly slick though. Bellew was always more of a thinking fighter than Nathan was/is.

Anyway I see Braehmer out boxing him over 12 in a 8-4 or 7-5 type scenario. Has Nathan boxed a southpaw before, either? If he has I just can't remember it.

I agree mate, the guy has literally no defence.

I find it surprising that he got as far as he did in the game, when you think about for his style to be ultra successful you need to have a number of advantages over an opponent, Stamina, Strength, Power etc and even with that every fight is a gamble due to his insistence on blocking punches with his faces.

I can see why he was matched so carefully, people slag off Warden for alot of things but Clev done very well by him.

That aside I would really like to see him win this fight, but I don't think the jumping up to cruiserweight and then coming back down will do him any favours in the long run.

Interesting fight; I expect it to be close regardless of who wins.

Clev may have already peaked, but giving Fonfara a tough, 7-5 type of match is probably more impressive than anything Braehmer has done in years. Juergen has been very protected and it was no surprise to me that he withdrew from the Shumenov and Clev fights a few years ago. I thought Krasniqi, someone Clev beat 12-0, won three rounds off Braehmer a couple bouts ago, Gutneckht gave him two competitive matches, and Sukhotsky had him in serious trouble and won 4 or 5 rounds off him in my opinion, so it's hardly like he's blowing away EBU level guys and showing himself to be a level above Clev.

It seems like Cleverley fell out of love with boxing a long time ago.

Braehmer is a decent boxer, but can be lazy and tends to take huge chunks of rounds (sometimes entire rounds) off during fights.
I can definitely see Cleverly outworking him for extended periods, but doubt he will win clearly enough to get a decision in Germany.

My gut instinct was to say Braehmer coasts through the early part of the fight, nicking rounds then scores a late stoppage against a weary Cleverly,
but I've taken a leap of faith and voted Cleverly this time.

I've been heavily critical of Clev over the years but he looked interested against Fonfara and I reckon an interested Cleverly can be decent. Mix that with the hope that Braehmer is getting old and I can just about make a case for Nathan. I think a motivated Nathan is better than Braehmer has faced in his recent run as "world champion" and if he can set a high work rate and make Juergen work 3 minutes of every round and drag him out of his comfort zone, we might just get a wee surprise

It's a close fight but has Cleverly lost his ambition? He seemed happy to take a loss in the second Bellew fight. Didn't do enough vs Fonfara, who I think he'd of beaten pre Kovalev.

Have to go with Braehmer in Germany.

The Fonfara fight was a great watch, could do with more of the same v Braehmer as he might be getting old and ready to go.

How did Cleverley's stamina and defence look in the Fonfara fight? His defence has always been a liability but it was worrying to watch him gas so badly against Bellew the second time out, his stamina and workrate is really his major asset at this level.

The extra weight did him no favours at all in the Bellew fight.
He was much improved against Fonfara (in terms of stamina and work rate at least) but his defence let him down again as he was winning the fight until he got his nose broke midway through and didn't seem to recover for a few rounds, those few rounds making the difference in the end, good fight though.

I would have loved this fight to have happened 5 years ago when it was supposed to,i was gutted when it got scrapped about 2 days before the fight, still i think its a great fight and i still think Cleverly can win it but it will be a tough ask in Germany,Braehmer is a quality operator, clever southpaw with good power and plenty experience,he won the Gutknecht rematch fairly convincely but Eduard came into it well and had his success too so maybe age is catching up with Juergen

Its been a while since Nathan fought Fonfara but he was excellent that night until his nose was broken and i think he'll take heart from that going into this fight,he'll have to pour it on Braehmer to make him uncomfortable as he(Braehmer) doesnt like to be roughed up and starts to feel sorry for himself and look to the ref for help, luckily enough pouring the punches on is Cleverly's style so he's got a real chance,i just wonder if he'll get a fair crack of the whip over in Germany

Cleverly vs Braehmer: who's gonna win?

Post by geronimo »

This saturday Cleverly and Braehmer will collide in Germany. Who do you think is going to win? For me is a 50/50 match. Hard to predict.

Not to sound too cliched but i can see Cleverly getting jobbed on the cards despite outworking Braehmer for the most part, defintely a winnable fight for Nathan though,he showed against Fonfara he wont be overawed fighting out of Britain

I really hope Cleverly wins this. Partly because I've followed his career from the beginning, partly because I admire the way he's picked himself back up after 2 bad losses, but mainly because I can't fvcking stand Braehmer.
