Krusher Win Close Decision Upsets Ward

Post by bnovelist »

He's been the most active over the years with a high workrate in the ring, he even floors Ward with a jab somewhere in the fight.

Krusher by stoppage or SOGgy by decision.

Or, Ward will prove how under-rated he is.

It's not an upset no matter who wins this fight.

I could see a Degeale/Dirrell situation occurring.
Ward wins more rounds, but Kovalev knocked Ward down or hurt him.

Those type of fights can be close.

Like Hopkins/Pascal 1 or Manny/JMM 1.

I agree. While the obvious results would be SOGgy by decision or Krusher by stoppage, the opposite of either is definitely in play. Krusher could score a combination of knockdowns and rounds to get the decision and SOGgy could catch Krusher with shots he can't see coming and stop him.

Krusher winning a decision is more likely than SOGgy winning by stoppage though.

I deliberately waited some time before watching Sergey's fight with Chilemba because I wanted to here what everyone thought.
I watched it this weekend and this is what I saw.
No question it wasn't one of Kovalev's best outings but at the same time I came away thinking he wasn't going for the stoppage and appeared to be eager to get a full 12 rounds in.
Physically Sergey looked good I saw nothing to be concerned at, his speed was ok not lighting fast but acceptable.
Power, it's clearly still there because the few times he stepped it up he was dominant.
Defence, a better boxer may have been able to take advantage of some positioning errors from Sergey and there was more than a few moments when he was caught flush although never in trouble.
Stamina looked good as he didn't strike me as struggling with the pace whatsoever.
The most impressive thing from Sergey was his attitude, he still has that nasty streak in him that when you piss him off he is going all out to make you pay for it which we saw late in the Chilemba fight, as of yet hardly anyone has escaped his wrath, we saw Hopkins stick his tounge out and act all cocky when he thought the finish line was in sight and Kovalev made him pay for that.
Overall he looks close to being ready for November and if he's 100% with an attitude Andre Ward is in for a very hard nights work and possibly the 1st defeat of his pro career.
It's all warming up nicely to November 19th for the biggest fight of the year, can't wait.

Agreed, kov will need a few kds for a close Dec. I'm more of the opinion is ward 9-3 or kovalev by ko.

I'll be surprised if Kov wins. Ward has the higher ring IQ. I'll be rooting for the Krusher. But feel Ward is the more educated pick.

How exactly will Ward be winning more rounds when Kovalev has a higher work rate and more effective punches ???

Come on, you watch too much boxing to pose that question. Guys like ward, defensive masters, drop all their opponents output, sergey does appear to possess that I don't give a fornicate quality. But how many people, other than me, thought Whitaker would make Chavez docile? No bigger balls than frochs and he never went for broke.

It's easy to see Andre Ward dictating the pace and boxing Kovalev from the outside I think that's what a lot of people see and they're right it's a clear standard strategy.
This is the Light Heavyweight division so traditionally it's not been the quickest and most explosive, it's more of a stronger physical type that is prevalent although there are exceptions.

Does Ward have quick hands ?
Scale of 1 to 10 for where he's at now I 'd say he's a 7.
Kovalev ... He's about 6.

So right there it's somewhat even but no one's really running away with it in the big scheme of things.

Boxing ability
Ward ... He's gotta be at least an 8 maybe 9
Kovalev ... About 6

Ward has clearly demonstrated throughout his entire pro career he's a top level boxer no doubt about it.

Power
Ward ... 7
Kovalev ... 9

Ward's power comes through his style, his positioning accuracy and timing.
Kovalev's power comes through natural strength drive and will to win.

Chin/Conditioning
Ward ... 9
Kovalev ... 9

Nothing in it

The fight might come down to who wants it more and there's a potential pound for pound number 1 spot on the line, so I think anything is possible.

I don't think Ward's ways of lowering opponents' output will work against Sergey. Sergey is smarter, stronger and hits much harder than Froch or Kessler.

Sergei is a smarter fighter now than what I thought he'd be, has added wrinkles to his game and has shown some ability to adjust ( rarely ever has to show it) so he's gonna be a hard damn night for Ward. But Andre can match him in most departments and is still the faster more athletic guy between them. Ward is gonna win the chess match, Kov has to land the big one or he's losing.

I hope you're right. While he he hits harder that isn't the point. Guys like that have so many subtle movements that make them just not there and even the greatest and ballsiest fighters are forced to reset. Duran/Leonard & Frazier/Ali performances don't happen as easily as we want them too.

Ward's head may not be there most of the time, but Kova must be smart enough to go to the body, and we know that he can knock people down with a jab to the body.

Does anyone actually expect this fight to take place?

I won't be getting my hopes up until they're both in the ring. I'm fully expecting "Ducker" Ward to pull out citing an "injury".

Your attack is quite meaningless.
