Panama Al Brown - Great Bantamweight World Champion

Post by GrangeLaner »

A new book has just been published about Panama Al Brown's life and career, called Black Ink.

It's available on Amazon and I recommend it. It's a very interesting story. I have a particular interest in that my grandfather, Dick Burke from Liverpool, fought him twice so wanted to read about the man himself as my grandfather told me stories of his fights with him while he was alive.

Apparently Brown fought quite a lot in Europe and Britain and fought 14 times against Brits. The only one to beat him was Johnny Cuthbert on a dubious disqualification) and NelTarleton drew with him at Liverpool's Football ground, Anfield.

The great "Enlogated Panamanian" Panama Al Brown fought in 15 countries all over the world. He was a TRUE WORLD CHAMPION in the sense of the De. The first Latin American boxer to win a world title in 1929.
Ironically, Luis Angel Firpo of Argentina could have become the first Latin s to win a world title when he decked the great Jack Dempsey on September 14, 1923. Dempsey was helped by the sports writers on ringside. He was out of the ring. Well, we know the story. Dempsey came back dramatically to retain his title.
