Canelo-Smith PPV: Golden Boy Pleased With 300K Buys

Is 300k buys a good number, given how unknown Smith was to casual US fans?

Canelo-Smith PPV: Golden Boy Pleased With 300K Buys

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Eric Gomez, President of Golden Boy Promotions, says his company is very pleased with the early buyrate numbers for last Saturday's HBO Pay-Per-View event, which featured Canelo Alvarez vs. Liam Smith from AT&T Stadium in Texas.

I guess I can agree with what has been said in the article.. Or they might just be making things sound a little different after people slating them for getting that many buys.

Canelo-Lara did 300K. Cotto-Martinez did 350K. So 300K for Canelo-Smith is pretty fair.

If DLH says 300K, it is realy 200-250K at best.

Still more against a guy that was totally unknown in the states than Golovkin did against against an opponent that had been on HBO multiple times in Lemieux.

The numbers will eventually be verified by Nielsen, so don't be quick to jump to conclusions.

No, they will not. Nothing was verified for Khan.

Yes, but Golovkin has been getting bigger, while Canelo hasn't.

When Mayweather and Pacquiao smashed the all-time record for ppv sales, Mayweather was 38. Alvarez has 13 more years to grow into those britches. When Mayweather was Saul's age, he was fighting Jose Luis Castillo for a purse of only $2.4 million. Mayweather had also previously fought Diego Corrales and received a purse of only $1.7 million, and made $2.2 million in his first fight with Castillo. By Saul's age, Mayweather had never headlined a single ppv, whether as the A-side or the B-side, whereas Alvarez has headlined 6 ppv's (usually as the A-side). At only age 23, Alvarez headlined the then-#1-selling ppv of all-time as the B-side and collected an expected purse of $12 million. By age 25, Alvarez has collected 7 purses of $2.5 million or more, while by age 25, Mayweather had never collected a purse of $2.5 million or more. Alvarez has also sold 900,000 ppv buys against Cotto. In total, ppv cards headlined by Saul have cumulative sold 4,510,000 buys. Pacquiao had never headlined a ppv by Saul's age. By Saul's age, ppv cards headlined by DLH cumulatively sold 1,610,000 buys. Golovkin had not headlined a ppv until age 33. At age 34, ppv cards headlined by Golovkin have cumulatively done 150,000 ppv buys.

The actual buy rates were 290k-310k. How did I check my facts? I researched it. What did you do? pluck a number out of the sky?

Anyway, David was no more known than Liam. Canelo is just a bigger draw than ggg. Nobody refutes that. 90/10 or 80/20 is just not an accurate reflection.

Okay, if you must. Adjusted for inflation, Mayweather collected 2 purses that would have been equivalent to $2.5 million+ in today's money by the time he was Saul's age. Saul collected 7.

That's laughable. You're trying to genuinely say that Lemieux doesn't have more familiarity with US audiences even if they're just boxing fans than Liam Smith, a guy that had never even fought within North America before fighting Canelo and had fought no recognisable name at all prior to that fight? Seriously? The Rosado fight was on HBO, the N'dam Jikam fight was on fox 2, the Guerrero fight was on showtime, the Rubio fight from years ago was on ESPN 2.

Whether or not he was a huge name in the states, he still had more of a profile than Smith did and to say otherwise is just silly.

I admit I was wrong regarding multiple times fighting on HBO but he has fought multiple times on US television. Something Smith hadn't done.

Lefty, what percentage split do you think there should be for a GGG-Canelo fight?

Americans don't watch boxing. Of course he's more familiar to boxing fans, I'd never seen Liam fight. He didn't sell a single ppv. Being on the undercard of Delorme/Lundy on HBO probably drew as many new viewers as an infomercial featuring him on hair would.

The whole point is a canelo/lemieux ppv would only marginally outperform canelo/Smith. In your never-ending hug canelo and shit on ggg agenda, you made it out like ggg fought cotto. Quick, talk about how hard ggg is chasing him some more.

Well that's just speculation on your behalf. There's no facts to actually back that up..... my never-ending huggery of Canelo? Yeah fair enough, I guess it's a good contrast to your never ending defending GGG's shitty PPV numbers and trying to deny the obviously fact that they're chasing the Canelo fight. So if Golovkin and his team aren't chasing that fight, why were they in attendance at Canelo-Khan? How many of Golovkin's fights has Canelo been at? I'm curious?

Incidentally, I wonder how big of a draw GGG would be if he weren't 'unlucky' in being Kazak. Just imagine if he were Mexican, American, or British,.....

Which non-Hispanic or American fighters were bigger draws in the US? Pac and Lennox I guess, but who then? Gatti maybe? Hatton?
