My main subject of interest related to the pugilistic sport, is researching American fighters of the old West -- men such as Jack Dempsey, "The Non-Pareil", James J. Corbett, Fireman Jim Flynn, Pete Everett and others.
My next project will be to hopefully document an 1889 fight between Corbett and Dave Campbell in Portland, OR. I have searched through every edition of the July and August, 1889 Portland Oregonion thus far and still can't find the bout reported.
Can anyone help with info?

I don't know whether this was true in the late 1880s, but I have found from my own research of Northwest newspapers that the summer months were relatively quiet, in terms of boxing activity. It was seen as an in-door sport around here, and the months of Sept. thru April saw the most action. Do you have a lead that says the bout you're hunting occurred in the summer?

Ric, All of Fleischers' Ring Record Books give the date of 7-29, 1889, Portland, OR. I'm thinking perhaps the fight may have taken place, if at all, in San Francisco. It's hard to imagine that "Gentleman Jim" would have journeyed around 600 miles for one fight against a relatively unknown.
