Top welters playing the waiting game

Post by DrunkenBoxer »

Pathetic.. all the top welters are afraid to schedule their next fight. Look at Danny Garcia had a fight back in January and hasn't stepped up for a second fight this year. Why? My guess is errol spence jr has something to do with it.

There's nothing to wait for. There was a time when you tried to stay undefeated to hopefully get a shot at Mayweather or Pacquiao, and the fat purse that goes with it. But Mayweather and Pacquiao are both pretty much retired. There is no longer anything to wait for. The only thing left to do is fight and make money.

I think the biggest impediment to matchmaking as a welterweight is that there aren't a lot of low-risk, high reward opponents available. There's basically Jessie Vargas, Amir Khan, Brandon Rios, Paulie Malignaggi, Jose Benavidez, and Andre Berto. You can't get a shot at Benavidez, Vargas, or Rios unless you are in the Top Rank stable. Malignaggi is basically retired. Garcia has already beaten Khan. Unless Garcia fights Berto, there is pretty much no one out there for him to fight except no-names like David Avanesyan and beasts like Kell Brook.

Welterweight, and super welter for that matter is a division of duckers.

Shame other divisions aren't like cruiserweight where the best fight the best with no ducking.

PBC & HBO = lack of funds
Lack of funds = Small paydays
Small paydays = No big fights

Haymon spoiled his fighters by paying them undeserved big purses for mismatches. Now they expect much bigger purses for competitive fights.

It's not the fighters, it's the promotional splits. Pbc is going broke, HBO has lost interest in boxing and tr only has a couple guys to round Robin.

Saying that the super welterweight division is full of duckers makes you look like you don't know anything about boxing.
Alvarez has fought Cotto, Kirkland, Lara, Trout, Mayweather, and Angulo.
Lara has fought Alvarez, Trout, Martirosyan x2, Williams, Molina, and Angulo.
Cotto is the all-time king of fighting everybody.
Trout fought Jermall, Lara, Alvarez, and Cotto.
Martirosyan fought Lara x2, Andrade, and Jermell.
Jermall fought Trout and Bundrage.
Jermell fought Martirosyan.
Andrade fought Martirosyan.
The now-finished Angulo fought Alvarez, Lara, and Kirkland.
The now-finished Kirkland fought Alvarez, Molina, and Angulo.
Molina has unbelievably moved down 2 divisions successfully. But as a SWW, he fought Bundrage, Kirkland, and Lara.

There are pretty close to 0 divisions that contain as many current or very recently world class fighters. There are full-stop 0 other divisions in which this many world class fighters fought this many opponents who were world class at the time.

Spence will become the best WW very soon, I expect him to be undisputed champion by 2019.

2 names none of yinz mentioned are Sammy Vasquez and Felix Diaz. Diaz recently beat Vasquez, and he got robbed against Peterson. I think Vasquez, Diaz and Peterson beat Danny Garcia.

Don't ever expect anyone to be undisputed, no matter how good, it seldom happens
