Groves to make terrestrial TV debut on Nov 18

Post by ozzy1875 »

Just announced, George Groves will box Eduard Gutknecht on Channel 5 on Friday, November 18th at Wembley Arena. WBA 12st international belt on the line. Interesting one and a strange choice of opponent. Show promoted by Cyclone Promotions.

Awesome, though I doubt Edward Nutsack, or whoever he is, will present too stiff a test.

He's the former European champion, a title he defended several times. No need to be disparaging.

Anyone who starts a sentence with "Awesome" needs disparaging

I like this from George not rushing himself into a world title fight at the first oppurtinity, taking his time and getting back to his best hopefully.

Not a bad opponent. Even if he does sound like a bowel disease.

Good news. The more boxing on council TV the better. Got Taylor v Ryan to look forward to in a couple of weeks as well :TU:

Sauerland still involved it seems, they're on the poster and promoting it on their Twitter. Cyclone have dates to meet for TV, they're stable isn't huge, especially for headling acts, so this makes sense, especially with the Shane McGuigan as Groves' trainer.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of anything about it being a joint promo until I read this thread

I've noticed Johnny Garton is on the bill too and he's with I believe Goodwin so presumably Cyclone are using a few contacts for the card.

Bit of a backward step after fighting Murray.

Couldn't a fight with Callum Smith have been made ?

He's not the worst opponent by any means - but at Light Heavyweight.

I don't think he'll be much cop at 168 personally though.

Too big a risk for Eddie when he can have DeGale Vs Smith next summer

I got a feeling this guy could be all wrong for George.

I like the way Channel 5 have stuck with the boxing...and still give us the odd good fight.

They showed plenty of Galahad's fights - they were building him - and it is equally good that they've not been put off by him doing a daft one.

Guessing Woodhall will be there; interesting to hear what he thinks of Groves Mark 3 (the McGuigan edition).

Why would any of them want to make that fight?

Because Callum must be fed up of fighting journeymen in undercard fights just to fill out Eddie Hearn's shows and George has a lot of miles on the clock and probably doesn't want to be wasting his time with European level fights.

They're quality boxers both of whom are very marketable and both of whom have a lot to prove for different reasons

It's the perfect crossroads fight with the winner guaranteed a proper world title shot

Gutknecht was a very solid EBU level fighter at LHW, though I'm not sure what he's got now, and how he'll fare moving down. Not an interesting opponent but not a horrible one either.

Be prepared to continually hear about how he beat GGG in the amateurs...I see Boxing News Online already has an article on it.

It's not a good crossroads fight at all.

Both are in line for a world title shot, so it's a very dangerous fight for both.

Nutsack could throw a spanner in the works here. Could get messy for Groves. Go the Nutsack.

Can't see Groves losing this.

Glad cyclone have the channel 5 deal. To be fair to Barry McGuigan he always seems to try and put his shows on terrestrial tv.
