'The Lionheart' Alex Leapai to return to boxing just months after announcing retirement

Alex 'The Lionheart' Leapai has announced a comeback.

Leapai retired in February following the death of his father and being warned he could go blind if he kept fighting.

After being inducted into the Logan Sports Hall of Fame last night, Leapai said he had unfinished business in the sport.

"I'm making a return back to the game," he said.

"Everything's all sorted out now, my eyes, had an operation on my eyes.

"My dad's in a good place now and it's just about time, it's time to unleash the beast."

Leapai said he was already back in training.

"Hopefully December will see me back in the ring," he said.

"I got a few offers overseas. We want to train hard, we want to win a world title and bring it home for Logan and Australia."

In February Leapai told the ABC: "I'm finished, I'm gone. You'll never see me in the ring again."

Boxing retirements are rarely forever. Good luck to him doubt he will win a World title but hopefully he can make some decent coin for his large family.

Can't see a single good reason for a Leapai comeback.

"I got a few offers overseas."

Coming back for all the wrong reasons. This isn't going to end well.

Alex needs to think again as there is no future in being used as a human punching bag, despite the promises of fistfulls of dollars.

Alex is a good bloke and I would hate to see him get knocked around. Let's hope he doesn't get thrown to the wolves and used as a punching bag.

If I ever had a scare where I could potentially lose my eyesight as a result of the sport of Boxing that would most definitely be the end of my time in the sport. Surgery or no surgery

ALEX Leapai is still 10-15kg away from making a comeback to boxing and — with concerns still over his eyesight — a sparring session with Australian champ Willie Nasio could decide whether the former world heavyweight title challenger fights again.

Leapai has been training for weeks with a view to resurrecting his career, but there are still concerns over his weight and eyesight following cataract surgery. He had surgery on both eyes after challenging Klitschko in 2014 and then complained of vision problems in his last bout against Manuel Charr in Russia.

Leapai said he spoke to a specialist who told him he risked losing sight in his right eye if he continued to fight.

Trainer Noel Thornberry said Leapai had lost 20kg but still had another 10-15kg to go before being in fight shape.

“Obviously the big fight for us would be against Lucas Browne but that is way down the track — maybe a year from now and four or five fights away...’’

"...a year from now and four or five fights away."

This does not sound like a good idea!
