Fantasy matches: Povetkin vs Tua, Mercer, Bruno, Witherspoon and Douglas

Post by Boxing Writer »

I was always critical about Povetkin, but I think he is a really good fighter, just far from the special one like some people here (asdfjkl and boxing rocks) tends to think. Povetkin has always had problems against tall guys who can box and move (Klitschko in the pros, Mazikin, Lezin, Carrion in the amateurs), but when he is facing guys who are smaller or his own size, he looks very dangerous.

What do you think about Povetkin’s chances against heavyweights from the previous decades? Not against “the cream of the crop” but the guys like David Tua, Ray Mercer, Frank Bruno, Tim Witherspoon, Buster Douglas?

I think Povetkin most likely would outwork David Tua and win by unanimous decision (something like 116-112 on judges’ cards).

Ray Mercer would be harder fight for Russian IMO since Ray had a great jab and Povetkin was always very vulnerable to jabs. But I’d expect Povetkin to edge him by the slimmest margin and win the fight by SD.

Frank Bruno would also give Povetkin a lot of troubles early with his jab, but would fade and got stopped in the late rounds IMO.

Witherspoon and Bruno - it depends on what versions of these guys would turn against Povetkin. I think Witherspoon and Douglas at their best would beat Povetkin, probably by KO/TKO, while disinterested and lethargic versions would get outworked by Russian.

I've always wanted to see Povetkin v Haye. It could still well happen but it's doubtful!

A motivated Tua I think would have ko'd Povetkin. Povetkin just isn't elusive enough. Wouldn't bet the house on it tho.

Prime motivated Mercer wins imo

Tua/Mercer were lazy fighters so it really depends if they took the fight serious or not. Mercer gave Lewis and Holyfield hell but he got school by Ferguson.

I'm a fan of Povetkin. But I need to know if Povetkin is taking peds or not in these fights.
If he is he wins them all.
If not Tua kos him in 9
Mercer wins a ud
Povetkin kos Bruno in 10 after a tough battle
Witherspoon out works him and kos Povetkin in 8
Douglas at his best wins a close decision

Povetkins beats Tua more often than not- always on points - but the big Kiwi has a puncher's chance.
Mercer at his best was better than Povetkin at his, and wins a competitive decision or possibly stops him. They would probably split fights.
Bruno had the tools to beat Povetkin, he'd probably get out to an early lead and fade late, dropping a close decision or being stopped.
Witherspoon at his best beats Povetkin at his, probably by a late stoppage or a clear decision. Fat, unfocused Witherspoon gets stopped.
The Douglas who stopped Tyson would beat Povetkin, no question, either by a late stoppage or wide decision. Pre-Tyson Douglas splits fights with Povetkin. Post Tyson Douglas get stopped.

Interesting; if all their prime, difficult to call. I'd give Povetkin the edge over all of them. I think Povetkin beats Bruno and Douglas more often than not. Tua has a punchers chance but a prime Witherspoon and Mercer would be closer.

And how about the heavyweights from the previous decades?

Are they on their PEDs or not?
