American Julius Long tops big card of heavyweight fights on Gold Coast
THE Gold Coast will be transformed into the land of the giants on Friday week when some of the biggest boxers in the world put punch into the local fight scene.
Standing head and shoulders above the rest is the 216cm Auckland-based American Julius Long, who tops a big card of heavyweight fights at Jupiters Casino on October 7.
The big man known as the Towering Inferno tackles former Penrith junior rugby league prospect Bowie Tupou, who went on to become a world-rated heavyweight before being bowled over by New Zealand’s world No.1 Joseph Parker last year.
Long used his telescopic reach to beat former Australian champ Justin Whitehead last year and made it into the ninth-round with world-beating Lucas Browne.
Current Australian heavyweight champ, Willie Nasio, fights Hunter Sam, whose father Doug won a Commonwealth Games silver medal back in 1982 and went on to fight for a world title at 76kg.
The big fight card also sees former Brisbane Bullets basketballer John Szigeti, all 203cm of him, trying to bounce Kurtis Pegoraro in a battle for the vacant Queensland heavyweight title.
Szigeti has had 11 pro fights over 11 years, his only losses coming against Lucas Browne and Brisbane’s world title challenger Alex Leapai.
There are also high hopes for the 192cm prospect Haze Hepi, who fights Conrad Lam on the Jupiters card.

Good card and can't wait. Putting my boxing ring up for this show and quite a few others in the next few months.
Re: Battle of the heavyweights - Sept 24th in Qld
Should be some mad fights here at Jupiters tonight. Australian Heavyweight Title should be a good one with Willie Nasio v Hunter Sam. Hasely Hepi on tonight and in negotiations to fight Paul Gallen in December.
Re: Battle of the heavyweights - Sept 24th in Qld
I hope Hepi doesn't fight Paul Gallen. Gallen will have him out early in my opinion. Conrad Lam has got the nod tonight.

Re: Battle of the heavyweights - Sept 24th in Qld
Qld Heavyweight Title was just an ugly fight over 8 rounds. Split decision to Pegoraro.
Re: Battle of the heavyweights - Sept 24th in Qld
Willie Nasio too big for Hunter Sam. Hunter retired in his corner at the end of 4. Not a bad fight.
Re: Battle of the heavyweights - Sept 24th in Qld
Julius Long and Bowie Tupou was a scrappy fight with plenty of holding. Julius lost 2 points during the fight. Split decision to Julius Long.

No probs. It was an untidy fight but in saying that, it was a pretty hard fight. A lot of tying up in close as you would expect from a Long fight. But both big lads had a bit of a crack. I thought Long won the fight pretty well, but with 2 points off I thought it could have made the scores a bit more interesting.Like a Boss wrote:Cheers for the coveragefox wrote:Julius Long and Bowie Tupou was a scrappy fight with plenty of holding. Mark Erickson had a few dramas leading up to this one with postponements and change of venues, so probably didn't get the crowd he needed. Hope his next one goes off without a hitch.

Scheduled McClung V Tillman bout was cancelled. McClung became ill in late afternoon and was unable to pass doctor.
Re: Battle of the heavyweights - Sept 24th in Qld
Yeah apparently McClung fell arse overhead in the shower and received a cut behind his head. They might get a run on his next one on 1st of December if it goes ahead.AntonS wrote:Scheduled McClung V Tillman bout was cancelled. McClung became ill in late afternoon and was unable to pass doctor.

Not often you can lose 2 points in a closely contested fight and still get the win.fox wrote:No probs. It was an untidy fight but in saying that, it was a pretty hard fight. Julius was definitely winning the fight so lucky it still went the right way. The 2 points off made it a bit closer.Like a Boss wrote:Not often you can lose 2 points in a closely contested fight and still get the win.fox wrote:No probs.
