Ricky Burns vs Kiryl Relikh & undercard. RBR.
Re: Ricky Burns vs Kiryl Relikh & undercard. RBR.
Burns has been on the other side of this in Texas. Let's not pretend Britain is the only place. No excuse though but it's not a new thing, everyone was up in arms after Beltran. Well almost everyone, some believed Burns should have scored points for having his jaw broken.
Anyway it's a problem in boxing all over the world. It stinks and spoils the sport but we all knew Relikh needed a knockout to derail the Broner fight (as Diddy said).

The judges scores were grotesque. It was a very close match. An insult to the world of boxing and to honesty.
Re: Ricky Burns vs Kiryl Relikh & undercard. RBR.
Bad/corrupt scorecards are a plague on the sport but a lot of people had Burns winning a close one so it's not like Relikh has been robbed of a win.
Robbed of decent, honest scoring, yes.

So 2 of the score cards were 1 round different to yours then; how is this a disgrace as some are saying? The third card was way off all and sundries though and should be looked at.crusader wrote:Even the 116-112 cards were generous. Relikh deserved a minimum of 5 rounds.

I played him at his own game. That doesn't seem to help much, all the judges gave awful scores, including ones from neutral countries. I suspect a big part is the crowd swaying them.Boxing Prospect wrote:Say it week in week out, all officials for world title fights should be from neutral countries.

Re: Ricky Burns vs Kiryl Relikh & undercard. RBR.
Check again. I said that Relikh deserved a MINIMUM of 5 rounds, as I think he clearly won the first two and last three. I also gave him another round and scored one other even, leaving my card at 115-114 for him, not 115-113 Burns.Realistic wrote:So 2 of the score cards were 1 round different to yours then; how is this a disgrace as some are saying? I never said the 8-4 cards were terrible, but they are still generous to Burns, and overall it seems the judges were biased towards the homefighter, which is pretty commonly the case wherever you go.
Re: Ricky Burns vs Kiryl Relikh & undercard. RBR.
I've seen worse cards than the 2 8-4 cards even though I didn't agree with them. I had it 7-5 to Burns but I thought the slip in the 12th could easily have been seen as a knockdown. It was certainly more a knockdown than the one in the undercard where the guy was clearly and deliberately hit on the back of the head and stopped. That though was far more of a house fighter decision than 2 judges getting one round wrong.
The 10-2 card was obviously ridiculous and it's time that any judge returning such a blatantly inaccurate card be automatically suspended or barred from judging in the future though the subjectivity of boxing always gives them an out.
I think Ricky is done and has been for a while. I think he would have been retired by now and wouldn't have stepped up to light welter if the management issue hadn't affected him so badly financially. He isn't equipped to deal with fully blown light welterweights and to be fair the skills he has have allowed him to compete with them which is testament to his talents.
He deserves to get a retirement fight for good money as his career has been an excellent one, especially as he was never a hard hitter even at super feather. He deserves respect for what he has achieved and I think history will be kind to him, especially in Scotland where he can hold his head up high. Time to cash out now though, he's fought for a long time and has a huge number of rounds under his belt. The longer he goes on the more I worry his bravery will see him get hurt badly.

In fact there is an argument for Ricky to be considered one of Scotland's top 5 boxers ever, easily top 10.
Benny Lynch, Ken Buchanan, Johnny Hill and Jim Watt are probably all ahead of him but he's in the argument for the next spot with Walter McGowan, Jackie Patterson, Tancy Lee and Scott Harrison.

This.
How anybody cannot score the first two and last three rounds to Relikh isn't just incredible it's actually disturbing.
The rest of the rounds you can argue about to at least some degree but these five rounds were clear rounds ........... or am I missing something??

Its hard to stomach that kind of scoring certainly the wide one. I just don't get it.
Even the casual fans who know nothing about scoring (And I include myself in that to some degree) could see it was closer than that a LOT closer.
Its all about the money and that's sad, hats off to Relikh, he deserved more than the judges gave him.
Re: Ricky Burns vs Kiryl Relikh & undercard. RBR.
Warrington v Amagasa had worse scoring as one judge had a gruelling and intense battle a shutout.
But, like the Burns fight, excellent contest and the right man won, even if the scores flattered him.
Burns v Beltran was bad scoring but in the other hand people say Burns was treated unfairly by the referee in the good fight he had in America.
Happens everywhere. I'm sure all judges keep hearing, in ways subtle and not so subtle, regarding different factors, why a win for X fighter will be good for boxing.

It's sad but he likely learned things during this fight, his stock will go up. He's actually fought someone good, gave a good account, gained some temporary sympathy, in one of the best fights in this country this year - so he's not regarded as a nonentity any more.Crazyboy wrote:I must be missing the same thing you did mateIan1973 wrote:crusader wrote:Even the 116-112 cards were generous.
