Prince Naseem Hamed Biggest Letdown
Prince Naseem Hamed Biggest Letdown
He had it all. The looks, the flare, the skills, the power, and charisma he could've been in Ali's class. Till this day I'm mad at Hamed firing Engle as
his trainer and giving up after the Barrera loss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbG3sbxd59E

Not his biggest fan myself
Re: Prince Naseem Hamed Biggest Letdown
Loved him as a boy! I've said before that he's the reason I started boxing. I loved his confidence. I actually agree with the OP. I was really pissed off and still a bit angry today about how he packed it in! He got too big for his boots and started relying on his power too much! He's a legend of British boxing but I always wonder what could've been!
Re: Prince Naseem Hamed Biggest Letdown
Yep, he was brilliant alright. His talent shone like a diamond. I don't think he had it all though, he didn't seem into his training enough. I know that sounds harsh but remember we're talking about an elite, world-class operator. I'm not sure he enjoyed 'the life' as much as the other guys at his level.
I remember when he was a lad and people used to talk about him. I didn't know anything about him, just the name. I used to wonder what all the fuss was about. Fair play to him for making good on that early promise.

that dude had amazing skills. amazing. but mentality.... one of the most athletic evasive dudes ever to enter the ring. but if youre not prone to stardom and doent have the management to protect you, i think elite pro sports is just to much for many.

He was from the gutter right since the beginning

A fun boxer, quite agile and to Barrere looked great. I will never forget his fight with Kevin Kelley. ![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

You keep proving, over and over, that you are clueless when it comes to boxing, and that also proves the mods must be very entertained by your idiotic trolling. Hamed was exposed by Barrera so people could see how limited he was. He was a show-boater with horrible technique, that happened to have a big punch. Definitely not HOF material.

Phenomenally gifted and could have been an all time great.
Had the skills to beat anyone including MAB.
Never understood why it all fell apart when he lost his O...... He could have built one hell of a legacy coming back from that.
On the other hand, he got out rich and healthy..... how many boxers can say the same?

Re: Prince Naseem Hamed Biggest Letdown
Dude literally RAN away from the sport the very moment he faced an elite fighter. He was running over physically overmatched opponents his whole career. His best win was over Kelley who was a good fighter but not great. He was also able to knock Prince down 3 times in 3 rounds.

Re: Prince Naseem Hamed Biggest Letdown
to me you can only ignore so many rules
of a professional game. in the end he ran
into world class opposition and that was
the end of it.
he had all the talent but you cannot leave
yourself so wide open against top pros. he
managed to pass kelly, but was doomed
to fail.

I think this article does a pretty good job explaining it but I'd also add that, once he split from Ingle, nobody knew how to teach his style. Not even Emmanuel Steward could help. I believe, if I remember correctly, he also had developed health issues before the Barrera fight and they were more serious than previously thought, causing him to hang em up after the loss. I strongly disagree with those who say Barrera was his legacy. That's total BS. Look at the number of wins over 5-star opposition on his resume. He pretty much cleaned out the featherweight division and made the little guy divisions (below lightweight) relevant again. His style was interesting to watch and he was one of boxing's most unique champions. Boxing owes a lot to him. Those HOF selections were more than deserved.

Re: Prince Naseem Hamed Biggest Letdown
Yeah, I know but, as I understand, Hamed was essentially retired after Barrera and the Calvo fight turned out to be a joke because Hamed took it on a whim and didn't take it seriously.boxingknockout wrote:Barrera wasn't his last fightjbizzle20 wrote:http://www.boxingnews24.com/2009/03/nas ... 99-retire/
