Re: List fighters with a better resume than Floyd Mayweather
Over a timespan of ONE YEAR AND NINE MONTHS, Sugar Ray Leonard engaged in fights against the likes of the following fighters:
• Captured the WBC World welterweight title against the unbeaten Hall-of-Famer, Wilfred Benitez, who himself had competed in seven world title fights over two weight divisions, losing only two of them (to Thomas Hearns and Ray Leonard), and holds victories over the likes of Carlos Palomino, Maurice Hope and Roberto Duran.
• Successfully defended his WBC World welterweight title against the WBC's 10th rated 147lb-er in the form of Dave 'Boy' Green.
• Lost the WBC World welterweight title against the Hall-of-Famer, Roberto Duran, who had only tasted defeat once over a twelve year and three month career.
• Regained the WBC World welterweight title against the Hall-of-Famer, Roberto Duran, becoming only the second man to inflict a defeat on an all-time-great that had been competing as a pro for more than twelve years and nine months.
• Successfully defended his WBC World welterweight title against the WBC's 6th rated 147lb-er in the form of Larry Bonds.
• Captured the WBA World super welterweight title against the undefeated Ayub Kalule, who himself had competed in six world title fights, losing only one of them and holds a victory of the great Sumbu Kalambay. His four losses came against naturally bigger and genuinely greater fighters, such as Ray Leonard, Mike McCallum, Herol Graham and Davey Moore.
• Unified the WBC and WBA World welterweight title when he became the first man to inflict a defeat on the Hall-of-Famer, Thomas Hearns' resume.
I didn't bother to list the accomplishments of Roberto Duran and Tommy ‘Hitman’ Hearns, because I’d only be stating the obvious.
For sure, I’m not proposing that Sugar Ray’s career surpasses that of Floyd Mayweather Jr., but in terms of a evaluating someone’s resume over their short-term prime years (such as the span of 21 months or seven fights), I don’t think anyone surpasses Leonard.![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

In every heavyweight golden era, look at what th 147 pound division was doing.
Always the most skilled and most competitive.

Re: List fighters with a better resume than Floyd Mayweather
It's unfair as the fighters from the past, early to mid 1900's, fought exponentially more than the fighters of today. They also fought everyone around. Floyd carefully picked fighters and fought barely twice a year while retiring twice in his prime.
As for in his own era, I'd take Manny's resume over Floyd's.

Re: List fighters with a better resume than Floyd Mayweather
For comparison, Mayweather's best opponents, in approximate order, were aging Pacquiao with an injured shoulder, Diego Corrales, 23-year-old likely pre-prime Alvarez, blown-up Marquez, and Ricky Hatton. On paper, that's a pathetic list of wins compared to most anyone we're going to be discussing in this thread. But he benefits from most ATG's also have more in-prime losses going against them.
Sugar Ray Robinson Not going to waste my time. On paper, SRR has the best resume of all-time, and there are 0 non-idiots who dispute that.
Carlos MonzonEmile Griffith, Jose Napoles, Nino Benvenuti, Jean Claude Bouttier, Rodrigo Valdes, etc.. Undefeated in his prime.
Rocky Marciano Joe Louis, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Jersey Joe Walcott, etc. Undefeated.
Henry Armstrong Barney Ross, Lou Ambers, Lew Jenkins, Caferino Garcia
Gene Tunney Harry Greb, Jack Dempsey, Tommy Gibbons, Tommy Loughran. Avenged his only defeat.
Joe Louis Max Baer, Billy Conn, Max Schmeling, Jim Braddock, Primo Carnera, Buddy Baer, Tony Galento, Bob Pastor, Arturo Godoy, Jersey Joe Walcott, Lou Nova, John Henry Lewis, Tami Mauriello, Al Ettore, Tommy Farr, Nathan Mann, Lee Savold, past-it Jimmy Bivins. What the actual f*ck.
Ezzard Charles Archie Moore, Jimmy Bivins, Joey Maxim, Jersey Joe Walcott, Elmer Ray, Pat Valentino
Pernell Whitaker Unofficially beat JCC and DLH. Azumah Nelson, Greg Haugen, Buddy McGirt, Jose Luis Ramirez. Basically no losses in his prime except 1 robbery, and a second robbery around the end of his prime.
Muhammad Ali George Foreman, Joe Frazier, aging Sonny Liston, Ken Norton, past-it Floyd Patterson, past-it Archie Moore, etc.. Avenged all of his in-prime defeats.
Sugar Ray Leonard Duran, Hearns, Hagler, Benitez. Avenged his only in-prime defeat.
There are various other fighters who are considered to have comparable to or better resumes than Mayweather, and I consider candidates for listing, but don't blow his resume away in such a dramatically absurd fashion -- Sandy Saddler, Harry Greb, Benny Leonard, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, Tommy Hearns, Julio Cesar Chavez, Archie Moore, Sam Langford, Harry Greb, Roberto Duran, Max Schmeling, etc..

Obviously you hadn't seen his fights. Qawi had incredible defense, great punch variety, great chin and good power. He wasn't as athletic or fast as Shane, and Shane was bigger puncher P4P. So yeas, prime Shane (but not the version that Floyd fought) was probably better than prime Qawi, but it doesn't mean he was more skilled. It's like Roy Jones vs James Toney. Toney was more skilled, but Jones was better overall with all his advantages in athleticism and speed.

I really like Floyd's knockout win over Ortiz though.
This guy has came out the other side the most overrated fighter in history. His career post-Hatton was nothing more than an exhibition in cherry picking, holding and running. It's alot easier to pull off too when you got the comission, drug testing agencies, judges & bayless in your pocket.

The worst part about it is that Floyd may have been TBE for all I know. He certainly had the skills to beat anyone in their prime but he never had the nuggets to chance it so we'll never know. We'll also never know how he would have faired away from Vegas and Moretti in these big fights.Ricky_ wrote:Mosley was about 85% shot and still nearly put Floyd's lights out. What about when Floyd almost cried and held his breath stomping his feet when he didn't like the gloves that Maidana was wearing in that first fight. The gloves that were approved by all the powers that be. The gloves that he trained with. Floyd was able to get the rules changed so Maidana was fighting with these foreign gloves for the first time. Unheard of.
No champion has EVER had the tables tipped so heavily in his favor for each and every title defense he made than Floyd. That can not be debated. From the IV he took before the Manny fight after denying Manny's request for a Toradol shot to the criminal way Kenny Baylis refereed the second Maidana fight. I could list dozens more reasons why Floyd's reign was marred with controversy and inequity.
But again, I think he may have had the skills to beat anyone in their prime but he never took on the challenge and that's the saddest part about his career. ATG, no way. Fantastic Boxer? Absolutely. But most greats craved great challenges during their reigns but couldn't find any. Floyd had plenty of stiff competition available but he chose to dance around them literally and figuratively.
Re: List fighters with a better resume than Floyd Mayweather

He had stomped the bejesus out of Margarito prior to fighting Floyd. People always sh*t on Floyd for fighting Mosley and De La Hoya past their primes, but go back and watch his fights from 2003. De La Hoya while I was never a fan has to be admired because he fought Floyd for no other reason except Floyd was P4P #1 and he wanted to beat him. I wish there were more fighters like that these days.
