Lenzie Morgan

Post by Mimmy »

Lenzie Morgan died on this day (15th October 2014) after being shot in the head after an argument with a man in Youngstown. Lenzie survived a house fire when he was a child and had hoffific burn scars on his body as a result.

Lenzie had his first pro fight in 1987 and began his pro career well enough losing once in his first 11 fights. Moving up to the big boys it didnt seem Lenzie had the tools to finish the job and began losing fights on a regular basis, however, a lot of the names that beat him went on to become world champions or elite in their respective weights. Infact Morgan was sparring partner for Sugar Ray Leanard and Thomas Hearns amongst great names, as he was a durable sparrin g partner and had great talent.

Names amonst those were Anthony Hembrick, Antoine Byrd, Andrew Maynard, Lamar Parks, Nigel Benn, Henry Maske, the list goes on. Morgan was very rarely stopped in his 33 losses and was only knocked out twice by the larger men, Kevin McBride and Ole Klemetsen.

Lenzie came to the UK on 3 occasions First to fight Nigel Benn and was beat on point by 1 round. Then appeared again to face Crawford Ashley, Ashley beat him on points by a greater margin and the final visit he faced Mark Prince. Prince had stopped all but 1 of his opponents before meeting Morgan and took him to a points victory.

Lenzie Morgan was no stranger to travelling either he went afar as Austraila and fought in Europe on several occasions again mainly getting beaten on points. From 1996 to 2009 Morgan found it impossible to win a fight and it was clear by 2003 when he met McBride and getting knocked out his resistance had gone.

After facing Emmanuel Nwodo in 2009 and getting stopped in the first round Morgan hung up the gloves and called it a day.

Out of the ring Morgan was a religious man and enjoyed reading his bible and spending time with his family. He also played the drums.

Thank you for this post.

These are the kind of guys who are heroes for just stepping in the ring and having such long varied careers.

Some like me tried their hand at boxing in the amateurs and just to reach the level these guys did is exceptional

He fought all the way up to HW?!!

What a man. Sounds like a warrior and gentleman who knew what this life was really about. God rest his soul in peace
