Hard Punchers with Few KOs
Ok, you've heard of them -- boxers who hit hard but for some reason don't get many KOs.
Why is this and who are they?

Re: Hard Punchers with Few KOs
It can be related to poor accuracy, stamina, and/or workrate. Jean Pascal has hurt nearly every opponent he's fought (his power seemed to bother Hop more than Kov's did), but he's only scored 17 stoppages in 36 fights and 30 wins, with just one of those stoppages coming in the last 7 years. His stamina is pretty bad, which leads to a low output and inability to finish hurt opponents.
I imagine that the list of hard punchers with records like 25-0 (6) is probably a very short one though.

Ovill McKenzie can definitely bang but only has 13 KOs out of 25 wins. Although most of the point wins came early in his career and he seems to have developed his power since then. Same as Liam Smith, he's got a poor KO record on paper but going into the Canelo fight he had I think 8 consecutive KO wins.

Darnell Boone has 12 KOs in 50 fights, though he knocked down/out three best light heavyweights on the planet.

Takam perhaps?
Jennings, Pulev, the Fury's are known for it, but their hit's aren't that hard.
Oh, Povetkin maybe, since he recently trained a lot more on strength.

Rey Loreto? 23-13 (15) - iced Joyi, has stopped his last 6, 9 of his last 10 wins have been stoppages (and the one that wasn't should have been as that cut IIRC came from a punch).
Arnel Tinampay (22-20-1, 8) - Hard to say HOW hard he punches but he destroyed Koshinmaru Saito, stopped Shoma Fukumoto, dropped Yosuke Kirima...maybe he just like Japanese meals, but Ben Watanabe seemed impressed when he wiped the floor with Saito. Problem here is that he seems to take fights on short notice, be lazy in the ring, and concentrate on not being stopped himself.

I remember often hearing and thinking that British journeyman Max Maxwell had a good dig, and he sparked Brian Rose iirc. Yet he only had about 2 or 3 knockout wins I think.

Good.call, I remember him crushing a dude called Matty Hough, Wolverhampton civic hall I think, Hough had nothing to deter him and he just rained overhand rights down. Max didn't have the speed and footwork to land those shots often but when he did he could definitely bang.TheWigwam wrote:I remember often hearing and thinking that British journeyman Max Maxwell had a good dig, and he sparked Brian Rose iirc. I've heard of Tinampay and his exploits. As far as Loreto and others with records like that, I would say anyone with over 50%
of their wins by KO is not a puncher with FEW KOs.
I thinking of guys who are feared, who you box and can't move for the next few days, but for some reason, they
just don't stop people often.

With Loreto I was thinking a sub 50% ko overall record was disproportionate to his threat but fair point.

Well Tinampay certainly fits the bill!

Good to hear, I guess short notice and level of opposition would add to thatCounter-puncher wrote:Good.call, I remember him crushing a dude called Matty Hough, Wolverhampton civic hall I think, Hough had nothing to deter him and he just rained overhand rights down. IMO, a main cause is throwing singles instead of combinations. Fighters like that will repeatedly rock the opponent, but never hit them with a follow-up immediately afterward, so they never drop them as much as they should be.crusader wrote:It can be related to poor accuracy, stamina, and/or workrate.

Re: Hard Punchers with Few KOs
More or less just been answered but there are no doubt a number of guys who can throw 1-2 really heavy shots but then either fail to follow up due to conditioning issues or simply for 1-2 punches they can really whack but putting together 4-5 accurate heavy shots they struggle with.
I sparred a guy whos right hand was concrete but he only threw it 3-4 times a round MAX. And when he did if he landed he'd step off you and watch, If he followed it up with another 5-6 punches you'd have been in trouble

Interesting. I wonder if he fights the same way, or just does that in sparring?
