IF Joshua manages to do an absolute number on Wlad, I don't think there'll be much argument that he is the man. If Wlad wins, Fury is still the man IMO.

Yeah I agree. I hope Fury is back fit and healthy ASAP regardless of what happens.

Agreed.

Almost a year ago it felt like a new dawn when the ageing tired champion was vanquished & new, younger & more entertaining guy was champion.

Now, it's back to the mess we had even before Wladimir was king.

The alphabet boys must think it's Christmas!

After the rematch with Wlad, Fury was looking down the barrel of defences against Joshua, Wilder, Ortiz, Parker, Povetkin, Haye... And I don't think he fancied his chances of going through that lot undefeated, so he was in no-man's land as champion. In my mind, some of those guys are more dangerous than Wlad, leaving us with a reverse situation where the strongest (potentially) don't have major belts.

Had Fury's prime opposition been Browne, Oquendo, Ruiz Jr and the like, I'm pretty sure he'd have continued. But his greatest challenges lay ahead, and he knew loads of people were gunning to see him lose. Too much pressure. On the other hand, having the public behind you (I'm thinking of Hatton in particular here) can make losing much harder to bear, since you might feel you've let your fans down.

For how long? How would you feel about Mayweather calling himself the welterweight champ? Ward's walkabout?

You can remain the best in most people's eyes (Louis during the war; Ali during Vietnam; Tyson in jail), but the championship's an actively contested title.[/quot]For how long in your eyes ?? going by your posts not long ago not long then

He might be entertaining out of the ring , but inside his style of fighting and the way he won the title was boring as eff .

I honestly think he would have had a problem getting large audiences longterm as people generally want to see ko's .

Until he vacated, so in my eyes there is no champion until someone unifies in his absence. But I don't think there's a single heavyweight who could beat everyone else right now; they all wanna fight the guys they think they'll beat exclusively (only human), and the whole thing's turned into this generation's Rawling roundabout.

Fury might easily handle Ortiz from range with his height advantage and movement, but I don't think Haye wants anything to do with the latter; Ortiz is all wrong for Haye. But I still give Haye a fair chance of clocking Joshua, who I can see steamrolling today's Klitschko and outgunning Fury... Wilder-Joshua feels like an absolute 50:50, who-lands-first bout at this point (we haven't really seen either in trouble, Whyte excepted), but again - I'd fancy Haye to beat Wilder. I think they all have an Achilles' heel, and only the Wlad of a few years ago had a chance of beating them all.

Yes, pretty logical. If joshua beat wlad on points in a tight one (which seems unlikely) then nobody would be the man.

It won't be for The Ring Magazine belt, as it needs to be two of the top three, which is what happened when Wlad (#1) fought Chagaev (#2) for The Ring Magazine belt.

Edit: It could be...... See below

RATING PANEL / CHAMPIONSHIP POLICY

Championship vacancies can be filled in the following two ways:
1.THE RING’s Nos. 1 and 2 contenders fight one another.
2.If the Nos. 1 and 2 contenders chose not to fight one another and either of them fights No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5, the winner may be awarded THE RING belt if the Editorial Board deems the contenders worthy. Here are the seven situations in which a champion can lose his belt: •The Champion loses a fight in the weight class in which he is champion.
•The Champion moves to another weight class.
•The Champion does not schedule a fight in any weight class for 18 months.
•The Champion does not schedule a fight at his championship weight for 18 months (even if he fights at another weight).
•The Champion does not schedule a fight with a Top-5 contender from any weight class for two years.
•The Champion retires.
•The Champion tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

RATINGS POLICY
1.Results. This is the most objective criterion and takes precedence over all others.
2.Performance. How a fighter performs in a victory or defeat can be a factor to determine his place in the ratings.
3.Track record: A fighter’s accomplishments in the recent past can be a factor to determine his place in the ratings. That includes quality of opposition.

THE RING Ratings are compiled by the magazine’s Editorial Board, with the participation of THE RING Ratings Panel of boxing journalists from around the world.

I've never really looked at it from this angle and although I don't believe it's the case, its a fair argument and could carry some weight.

He could feasibly sit it out for a year, let them all fight each other and come back and fight the winner of the series of fights!

Exactly. No-one but Fury knows if I'm right, but it's a much rosier picture next year if he lets them all thin each other out. Motivation-wise, they always say that it's harder to retain the belts than to win them. That's obviously false if the guy you take them from's clearly the best in the division, but was Wlad still that man?

By that logic you could claim Ortiz is the man since he beat Jennings more convincingly than Wlad.

Really I think they'd need to fight to establish the top dog.

Would have made far more sense to do it after his rematch with Wlad. He'd have made way more from the rematch than he did the first time. He could've likely snuck in an easy defense too for a little extra, and could've been set for life.

He would have had his purse revoked for cocaine abuse so makes no sense defending if you are going to lose your purse.

?

So you think he'd take cocaine so soon before fighting Wlad intending to fight him, in any sort of mental state fit to box?

I dont know, I dont know what goes on in some peoples minds. Some people have reasons for doing what they do and dont think about being caught. You only have to look at drug smugglers to understand that. Why would a British person for example go to Columbia and come home without being a suspect at the airport? We dont know how many years some people have been taking illegal drugs.

I'm just saying that what is the point defending a title if you know you are going to lose your purse when the barn door has opened.
