Khan crashes
Well sort of.
BOXING hero Amir Khan was last night at the centre of a police inquiry after his new car knocked down a man on a pelican crossing.
The 19-year-old, who turned pro after his Olympic silver medal in 2004, was in rush-hour traffic driving the £60,000 BMW AC Schnitzer 6-series convertible he bought just 10 days ago.
Onlookers said the pedestrian was flung into the car's windscreen - which smashed - in the lightweight's home town of Bolton at 4.45pm.
And Khan, who passed his test just before his birthday last December, was "devastated" as the man was taken to the local Royal Infirmary with a suspected broken leg.
A bystander said: "Amir was very upset. He stopped immediately after the guy at the lights was hit and jumped out to see if he was OK."
The man is believed to be a foundry worker in his 40s on his way home.

Whats even worse is they made him talk about his new car after his last fight.
The commentator said something about 'I hear you have a new convertable'. Then Khan goes onto describe it and the commentator finishes off with 'You deserve it'
When he said Hamed was a hero of his, I didn't think he meant it literally :)

Khan actually gets only a small weekly stipend of his own (less than 100 quid), the rest is being put away. The car was a gift from Warren, I think.

Christ you guys, your making out Khan is already on a downward spiral. The guy is entitled to drive what he likes and I bet if many of you were in the same situation you would have a new flash motor!
Most people have accidents especially not long after passing a test, the only difference with Khan is we all get to hear about it.
And as regards getting too much too soon if the demand is there to see him box (8000 people Nottingham Arena) then he deserves all he gets.

Yeah fair comment. Was just a bit alarmed to hear it, as you say, if it weren't Khan it wouldn't be news.Jamie Sanigar wrote:Christ you guys, your making out Khan is already on a downward spiral. I thought he bought the car himself, didn't he say he'd gone out and bought it when he was interviewed?
I worry though with any young prospect that the trapping of success can come too early and take away their desire. However, in personal terms we all want to be wealthy and successful (wish I bloody was), so legacy as a fighter often comes second to fat bank account.
I don't blame Naseem Hamed for effectively quitting the sport for 4 years, what's the point getting your head punched in when you've got a fortune tucked in the bank?

I don't see it that way, Khan is ambitious, he wants to prove himself, also he knows that the spotlight is on him, he doesn't want to lose in front of millions of people watching him on TV.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Boxings about hunger, Khans already got everything, theres some American/Mexican prospect with nothing wanting what Khan already has. Khan probably won't improve that much because he doesnt need too.
Khan also seems intelligent , he knows whats expected of him, and he has good family and advisors around him.
Yes of course if a person has nothing, then there is the incentive to earn enough to get you out of it.

Just upgraded from an Almera to 2 V6 Enginers and it was a bit of getting used too in the first week or 2, so that sort of car would be more than twice as powerful, goto be a bit of a tool to knock someone over on a crossing thoughnickd wrote:Indeed, but this is no ordinary 6 series AC Schnitzer are a specialist BMW tuning house, that thing would be hard enough for someone with years of driving experience to handle!Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:If he just passed in December maybe a 6series BMW is too much power for him to handle.

This is precisely what I mean, the old 'you can't be hungry when you sleep in silk pyjamas' or however it goes....Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Boxings about hunger, Khans already got everything, theres some American/Mexican prospect with nothing wanting what Khan already has. Comes down to the mentallity of a fighter. there are many who have made millions and still produce the goods, Holyfield, Hopkins, Barrera etcjamesmcdonnell wrote:This is precisely what I mean, the old 'you can't be hungry when you sleep in silk pyjamas' or however it goes....Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Boxings about hunger, Khans already got everything, theres some American/Mexican prospect with nothing wanting what Khan already has. Ah yes, but every one of those fighters were well into their careers before they started making a lot of money. Barrera and Morales came up tough started young and fought 30-40 times before they were in the money. Hopkins too.
By the time the money came they had already had their fighting psyche forged in the crucible of battle.

Yeah but maybe he should be reigned in a little for his own sake... driving cars like that is no joke and it beggars belief that someone is allowed to drive such a powerful car with so little experience... tempting fate I'd say...Jamie Sanigar wrote:Christ you guys, your making out Khan is already on a downward spiral. I think the fact that Khan has already spoken about when he retires is rather worrying... hardly speaks of a burning hunger...jamesmcdonnell wrote:Ah yes, but every one of those fighters were well into their careers before they started making a lot of money. Yes they reached the summit before they got their money. Imagine if Hamed was pennyless at the time of the Barrera fight and needed to beat Barrera to give his family a decent life. We may have had an all time legend but we had a very complacent Hamed. Hamed needed to reach the standard where he was WBO Champ before his money came in, Amir just needed to reach the standard of knocking over tommato cans.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Ah yes, but every one of those fighters were well into their careers before they started making a lot of money. Not only that but even today when fighters make their first million their never quite the same, when fighters make it they drop off (or stop improving), Tyson/Hamed potential was never reached because of huge incomes. When Hopkins gets acclaimed P4P no1 his game dropped a little(yes he got older too). I think Hatton is on the decline (although he trains with ferocity) I can't see the hunger been the same.
Leonard and ODLH are obvious exceptions to this rule. Maybe Khan will emulate them.

I'd rather be Hamed with £10million in the bank than a street urchin from the barros with sweet FA...
If you've followed a boxer through his training and build-up to a fight, you'd tell him to get his hands on as much money as he can, in as short a time as he can get it. Ain't no joke being a full-time fighter.

Ray Leonard and DLH have planet sized egos and are two men cut from the same cloth.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Yes they reached the summit before they got their money. Hopkins had also made a lot of money by the time he fought Taylor, and wasn't prepared to put it all on the line and risk an embarrassing KO.
Roy Jones is another exception, up until the middle of his light heavyweight reign, he was obviously still hungery, despite being a multi millionnaire.
