1# Jersey Joe would out box Ray for much of the fight he would be come over confidence with the ease he was out boxing Mercer and gets caught by a big Mercer over hand right that drops Joe heavily early in round 7 Joe gets up at the count of 8 to box safely for the rest of the fight to win a wide un dec in a dull affair. :box:

2# Marciano and Mercer fight on even term's for the first 3/4 round's in a bit of a phone booth war neither willing to give an inch Ray would start to struggle with Rockys pressure by round 5/6 The Rock would be positioning himself on Rays chest then throwing well timed punch's to head and body his body work would start to affect Ray by round's 7/8 and his face would be starting to get puffy/swollen Ray would try desperately to mount a come back but to no avail with Rocky all over him midway through round 10 when the ref jumps in to save Mercer from further punishment. :box:

3# Patterson gets rocked badly in round 2 then gets dropped and nearly stopped in round 3 by Mercer but after a rev up from Cus in between round's Floyd start to show his superior speed with his hand's and feet Big Ray becomes frustrated that he suddenly can't get to Floyd who seems like a different fighter Floyd out speeds and out boxes Ray in the middle round's Mercer is out on his feet when the bell rings to end the fight Patterson wins a entertaining un dec. :box:

#4 Norton comes out aggressive against Mercer they fight at a fast pace that is set by Norton by round 7/8 the fight is being fought at an even keel until Norton staggers Ray in round 10 by this time The fast pace is really getting to Ray and his face is a mess the doctor checks him out and lets him come out for round 11 Rays Big heart will not fail him but his corner stop the fight at the end of round 12 with Norton the winner by 12th round Tko. in candidate for fight of the year :box:

Always thought Mercer was inconsistent which makes it hard to predict what would happen. (Clueless against Holmes, lethargic against Ferguson, unmipressive against Damiani but then rallied, looked very good against Morrison, Holyfield, and Lewis.)

Anyway here goes:
Against the early Walcott, Mercer wins by KO in the mid-rounds. Walcott had bad management and trainers.
However, with Don Florio as his trainer, he was a different fighter. He was fast on his feet, and had a great left hook when in close. Mercer's pressure would make it interesting, but Walcott pulls out a decision.

Marciano and Mercer would fun to watch. It would be vicious. Eventually Marciano's superior power and most of all stamina would prevail and he stops Mercer in the 13th or 14th round.

Against Patterson, if Cus is the chief second, I am picking Mercer. He stops Patterson in the mid-rounds. If Florio is in charge, Patterson's attack is more varied and Patterson pulls out a decision though he gets decked a couple of times.

Mercer has some trouble landing on Norton. Norton wins a decision, something like 10 rounds to 5.

Sergeant Mercer is a good overall 'what if' question against heaps of modern era topline heavyweights.

Like Ambling explained...sometimes he looked like the division's main man in-waiting and then he looked pretty beatable.

More than a few good judges felt he got a rough deal against Big Lennox and Lewis looked as if he'd had a bad argument with a cricket bat.

But then the supposedly 'soft' European 'gimme' Damiani boxed him beautifully for a long period and Mercer was forced to pull something out of the bag. (For the record, I think Damiani was a way better fighter than some gave him credit for)

'Consistently inconsistent' might be a good phrase.

If he starts right against Floyd it could potentially be over-fairly quick, but I think he has see-saw wars with Norton and Marciano and maybe the opponent in question edges a close points win. Having taken plenty in return!

Ray spoke with Boxing Monthly a few years back and gave an inkling that he was a 'mood fighter' and that he was very well-aware that he blew hot-and-cold.
