George Benton.........Trainer and boxer.
Did anyone read the book, IN THE CORNER.........in the book George Benton boxed as a light- heavyweight and had a record of around 18 wins with 2 losses..........he was fighting outside his home state when he was going to have a bout against a local favorite. But they knew nothing about Benton and he told them he was like 5 wins with 15 losses, this was he could get the fight against the local favorite and make some money.......They did not want their local favorite to fight anyone of high calibur...... Angelo Dunde was working a different fighter at this bout and saw Benton and did not fink on him. Does anyone know what bout Benton is rferring to in the book......Does anyone remember the book...........IN The Corner...?
.......please post any responses.................. ..

In this Corner by Peter Heller?
Fantastic book!
Re: George Benton.........Trainer and boxer.
I have the book you just mentioned "In this Corner" by Heller but it doesn't mention Benton. I watched Benton train Marvis Frazier as an amateur and he did a great job. Benton went on to open his own gym in Philly and Joe took over training Marvis as a pro and changed his style to fight like him. It didn't work for Marvis. Benton did a good job with all of the '84 Olympians that Lou Duva signed at the time but George started to hit the booze real good back then which ended his career as a trainer.Cutman Scabbers wrote:vatech1983 wrote:Did anyone read the book, IN THE CORNER.........in the book George Benton boxed as a light- heavyweight and had a record of around 18 wins with 2 losses..........he was fighting outside his home state when he was going to have a bout against a local favorite. Fantastic book!
The word back then on Benton as a fighter was that he was real good but took a bullet in the back from some women's husband or boyfriend. He boxed at middleweight.
Here is a video of Benton fighting Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter with Arthur Mercante as the ref.
