Maybe but as a former British Champion Woodhouse has my respect, what's Deakin ever done?
I don't know Deakin so have no reason to defend him; fighting as a pro with a legitimate disability?
He seems more mentally handicapped rather than anything else.

That would be an incredible stupid idea as it is. Aside from being incredibly unhealthy; trying to ear only beans on toast once a day would cause you'd body to go into starvation mode, making it really hard to shift any way. I'm sure you already know that anyway but yeah bizarre for a professional athlete to come out with something like that.

Lol savage. Yeah as I said I have no reason to defend him and admittedlyhe does come across as a bit of a twat- he was born with quite a debilitating physical disability however which would make being a professional sportsman pretty damn hard. Maybe that's why he is a prick because he feels the disability has held him back which is kind of understandable.

Gavin was an incredible talent who has seriously under achieved. Heard some naughty stories about him in the GB set up from someone who was also on squad so not the biggest surprise in the world but as Sickboy stated so eloquently on Trainspotting whatever he had he won't get back.

"Well, at one time you've got it. Then you lose it. And it's gone forever. All walks of life.."

As a fighter realises that he perhaps isn't quite as good as he himself and others had him believe, so the level of dedication drops off to match, - psychologically this makes failure easier to cope with, as the fighter can tell himself he did very well for someone who couldn't be bothered to train hard.

It's something people in all walks of life do, and then when they are old men, they bore people in pubs with "I could have been xyz - but I never really threw myself into it fully."

I've been telling myself the same for years, but recently I have concluded that perhaps I'm nowhere near as talented as I thought I was, or perhaps I'm just scared. Who knows.

However, the point remains that people in some senses are self-limiting, they drive themselves to the level of accomplishment that suits them best.
This. Which is why I find it irritating that people go on about fighters who "lack talent" but make up for it with hard work. Dedication and discipline are themselves talents. In particular, being able to push yourself harder than others, even when you know it comes easier to them, and not worry that it might all be a waste of time, is a hell of a talent.

That is a talent too but we do it in all sports, football especially. We all know someone who is a wizard with the ball and makes the game look easy. Probably better than some pros in terms of what they can do with a ball but can't read the game well, train hard, commit etc. Those with this talent are just more visible and frustrating

I think that's why it's so rare aswell when you have guys like Ronaldo or Messi by all accounts who have both attributes.

Definitely more rare these days. Raw talent will get you to L1 these days rather than the top. I'm sure I read that utd players used to laugh at ronaldo for all the extra sessions and dead ball stuff he used to do. Doubt that would happen now

I remember a comment joe Murray said once that he only ever drinks fizzy pop and wouldn't no water if you threw it in his face and his diet is a joke, sounds about right then

I'm still astounded that a pro boxer would drink fizzy drinks all the time and eat beans on toast. Just LOL!! Gavin needed to sort his head out and stop living like a student. Sometimes it's best for those types to just go home and get fed by their parents til they can grow up a bit, which I think he did. But overall, yeh it was just a slightly weird window into his overall personality which set off tons of alarm bells for me at the time (along with some of his other posts) and has gone on to show itself in his underachievement.

I do think James McDonnels post is a class post though, it's definitely that as well with Gavin. The mind is a powerful thing and we can play all sorts of tricks on ourselves and make little excuses for ourselves, when in reality maybe we just find our level, Gavin definitely did. It's a very special few who can really break out of their talent level with absolute monster levels of dedication and professionalism.
