Not at all, he's so overrated now being called underrated i may not give him enough credit. Here it's a question of who's power shot lands first.

I agree, but I think pre Holmes Cooney had a lot to offer.

Cooney wins via knock out.
I absolutely lover Shavers. But he couldn't take Cooney power.

Fun fight while it lasts

I would rate Cooney chin better than Shavers

We'll just agree to disagree on that one. I think Gerry had moderately better stamina, Shavers was a significantly bigger puncher with better hand speed and, dare I say it, better defense.

It was supposed to happen in August 1980. Cooney dropped out and Randall Cobb stepped in. If Cobb beat Shavers, I think Cooney would have too.

Cooney didn't have the mental and emotional components.. One loss destroyed him.. Instead of learning from the Holmes defeat, he took over 2 years off and was 10 times worse when he came back.. He had nothing when he fought MIchael Spinks.. It wasn't just a substance abuse problem, his psyche was destroyed.. Everybody he met put so much faith in him and he felt he let them all down, and that was something he couldn't handle.

A win can do the same thing to the psyche another fighter.. Buster Douglas's victory over Mike Tyson destroyed him.. He had several losses before he ever fought Tyson and he took all his losses in stride.. Douglas never expected to be the greatest Heavyweight and nobody else ever expected much from Buster.. He was a 42-1 underdog but he "knew" he was going to win.. He knew every since his watched the Tyson-Tucker fight and his eyes lit up.. In his heart He knew he could beat Tyson -- at some moment while watching Tyson-Tucker the realization struck him and he trained hard because he knew it.. After that he wasn't too sure who he could beat.. He didn't prepare for the Holyfield fight.. He was back to being the old Buster but 10 times worse.. Tyson Fury may never fight again.. If he does he might be terrible.

Boxing, or any other sport has big mental and emotional components.. You have to believe to do your best.. Not just in Boxing, but in anything.

Shavers fought the BETTER competition and would have worried Cooney out of it with a 3 round KO in devastating fashion :box:

Hugely entertaining fight I would pay the ppv cost for knowing its going less than 10 minutes. I'll favor Cooney.
