Excellent, but chinny

Post by ValMar »

I will try to make a proper list of excellent fighters with the soft chin :

1. Rigondeaux
2. Khan
3. Fury
4. W. Klitschko
5. Pacquiao

What do you think about my list ? Do you agree ?

Khan is the only one on that list I'd call chinny. Pac has taken some huge shots over the course of his career. His style lends itself to knockdowns.

Fury is definitely not chinny.

Wlad, when looking at his entire body of work can't really be classed as chinny. He suffered more from stamina issues early, and then confidence issues after. His chin wasn't the real problem.

Yuri Gamboa, when he was still active. He fought great, but just kept hitting the deck. David Price is a solid boxer, but he has the glassiest glass jaw I've ever seen in an allegedly divisional top 50 fighter. Agree about Amir Khan.

Wlad is definitely chinny. His entire style was changed by Steward with the specific intention of never allowing his chin to be checked again. Stamina had little to do with it.

I disagree. He was never out cold in his career, and the only fight where his chin 100% let him down was Sanders. Again, look at his body of work. Wlad will never be remembered for an iron jaw, but anyone who objectively looks at his career will see that the weak chinned Wlad never really existed.

Wlad was definitely chinny, it was just a hard to reach/find chin. His overly cautious style, excessive bear hugs, and allergy to trading shots were designed specifically to protect that chin. Stamina was ALSO an issue not only.

Pacquiao chinny? Sweet Jesus what on Earth are people watching.

Kahn yes, Fury maybe, it does appear that way, Rigo same as Fury.

I agree with everything you said. Wlad in my opinion shit scared of getting hit and doesn't trust his chin. If he did he would've let his hands go and battered Fury. I dont think Fury is chinny yes he has been down but looked ok after a few rounds.

Wlad had an aversion to taking punches due to his lack of confidence after the Sanders fight. It was a career defining moment. Wlad has taken many shots following the Sanders fight that would have stopped a chinny fighter. He took several big shots from Fury in his last fight that didn't faze him. His chin wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. Chinny fighters don't get back up al la Khan.

Pac used to be fragile (almost stopped by a jab from an average hitter and down regularly) but his durabilty has been fine for at least the past decade.

I wouldn't say he's excellent, but Linares is another top fighter with a shaky chin.

Manny :brick:

Guy eats to make weight and took the best from
Cotto, Margarito, Clottey, Floyd, Rios, Mosley, DLH and JMM (except one punch).

His chin is like a 90 rating in my opinion.

I agree hes got a good chin but he didn't take the best from Clottey, Mosley, Mayweather, DLH and, i can't remember how much he took but I assume the Margarito fight played out like the DLH fight. Manny doesn't like being hit. He avoids it with his fast feet, darting in and out and if that doesn't work he pours it on offensively like he did with Clottey and completely shuts their offensive output. As for the Mayweather fight, Mayweather loaded up only a few times, i remember him missing most of them except for a shot that hit mannys neck. The mosley fight is terrible, so fking boring, worse than Mayweather/pac except theres a knock down early on, still shite though, not many punches landed.

He didn't take a beating, but everyone landed clean, Manny stepped back knocked his gloves together, and came back fighting.
Almost always within 10 seconds.

He's got a good chin and fighting spirit. I just think he's a little more defensive than people make him out to be. Not that you were saying that.

No. Rigo just touches down occasionally and has been hurt a couple of times - his punch resistance seems no worse than ok to me. Maybe he wouldn't last long fighting Michael Katsidis style but I wouldn't say he is chinny at all.

Fury isn't the most co-ordinated but I've never seen him close to being stopped. His chin is maybe somewhat unknown but so far so good, barring a few minor KDs.

Pacquiao had a fine chin. One freak KTFO from an underrated puncher doesn't change that. If Marquez lands (probably) more than 400 punches on you one of them is bound to knock you out eventually.

--------

Khan is fair enough. Hurt, wobble-legged and put down more than a few times. Hell, even Algieri was trying to knock him out.

Wlad's punch resistance is weak for someone who had been the best in his division for so long. Maybe it is a weakness that has been overstated in the past but it is surely still there.

Linares is another one and probably Danny Jacobs. Then maybe Andy Lee to round out a top five off the top of my head.

He did take Cotto's best who is just as good as all of the fighters you mentioned.

I have to explain my post. So, There is no need, absolutely no need, to discuss about Rigo's and Khan's chins. It is evident; both of them are extremely skillful, elusive, tricky, crafty, etc, etc, but, they have very, very soft chins. The similar thing could be told about Tyson Fury. Simply, I can not forget how Cunningham and Pajkić had dropped him. Every boxing fan has to admit that two mentioned fighters are not powerful punchers, and I think (not sure 100 %) that Fury has been heavier more than 20 kg /44 lb than Pajkić (or Cunningham).
Wlad is a genuine champion, strong, skillful, devoted, but his style is adapted to his weak point - chin. Every unbiased fan knows this fact, and I have to repeat : I have a great respect for Wladimir Klitschko, he has been ruled more than a decade.
I have a great respect for Pacquiao, too, but....When I had watched his match against JMM, in a moment, I had thought that Pac was dead, literally dead, and that was quite enough to put him on this list...Yoy have to admit that JMM is/was not David Tua or George Foreman. :TU:

Khan and Rigondeaux belong on this list but I don't think the others do. Under this rational, you would have to include Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. I think that it's a quality OP though and worthy of discussion because there are some fantastic fighters out there that just don't have a chin. Khan is the best example i think. I think that he's probably the best glass jaw boxer in history If he had half of a chin, he'd be elite. Heck he was bordering on elite with it so that shows how good the kid is or could have been. He's been buzzed so many times that I think he should really wrap things up at this point.

Fury got knocked down because he was goofing around. Wlad landed a couple solid punches (and headbuts) and never really hurt him.

Are we going to call Ali chinny too because he was knocked down (and badly hurt) by a tiny Henry Cooper?

I have to repeat : Fury is elusive, crafty, tricky, but his chin is a weak one. Can you imagine Kovalev to be dropped by Crawford ?
