If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
Golovkin has fought only 2 times this year. His trainer and his promoter said they want to keep him active and fight at least 3 times per year. Why they don't call Lara's bluff and make it happen. I think in Inglewood(Forum) would sell pretty good, even better than in Wade or Willie Monroe Jr fights. And let's be fair Lara would be the best/most recognized fighter to date of Golovkin.

Re: If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
Last year, Abel Sanchez claimed that Lara is a smaller name than Monroe Jr. and HBO couldn't sell that fight. He also says that Erislandy needs to compete in the 160lb weight division before Golovkin would consider facing him, because doing so now would make GGG vulnerable to receiving criticism for competing against a smaller man.
Lara still competes at 154lbs and despite Golovkin’s willingness to face smaller men, the situation hasn’t changed since Sanchez made those claims.

Re: If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
I'd be down with seeing him fight Lara. Lara would be down with the fight I figure. The big question is...Would Al Haymon be down with the fight?

Jacobs is mandatory, he has to fight him next. He's done this year.

Re: If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
WBA ordered Jacobs to be Golovkin's next fight. He couldn't possibly fight Lara or a mandatory of another org or even have a stay busy fight.
Loefler should have pushed for a purse bid earlier instead of asking for delays and screwing Gennady up.

Re: If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
To be fair, there’s still 12 days remaining of the contract negotiation extension that Tom Loeffler lobbied the WBA for in order to agree the terms of the GGG-Jacobs bout.
If K2 start negating terms of a contest against another fighter, without waiting for the WBA’s mandatory process to progress through to completion, then he’ll get stripped on his Super World Middleweight title.
To be fair to Jacobs, K2 were against him taking an interim bout, so they can’t be hypocritical, by requesting that GGG deserves one.

All Lara's team has done is talk about the fight. Tom Loeffler actually made a phone call about it.apollo creed wrote:Golovkin has fought only 2 times this year. Luis DeCubas Jr says it would have to be on Showtime, so that should tell you all you need to know about how much they really want it. Lara is not contractually obliged to fight on Showtime. They know GGG is contracted to fight on HBO.
Also there's rumors of Lara fighting Yuri Foreman next in Miami lol
Re: If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
Lara's a crap fight for GGG. Lara would suck the drama out of the fight by running the way he does and Golovkin would end up knocking him out late or win on points with most of the fight being run and chase, mirroring the Canelo fight. Laras not a big enough name to risk ruining the knockout momentum that is Golovkin and getting criticized for fighting another smaller man AND a victim of Canelo. In my opinion putting one of the most listless fighters in the world against the most thrilling is a poor marketing decision. Golovkin has been building his popularity among fans, he fights hard and has done it the hard way, finally he is getting some recognition, I can only see Lara derailing all that progress and theres no need to fight the dregs of Canelo. I understand it from a hardcore boxing fans point of view although, I want GGG to thrive commercially, become big enough so the big fights come to him instead of whats happening and I don't see this fight attracting casual fans if it plays out the way I think it would.

Here's what Luis DeCubas, Jr. actually said:
"Lara's Manager on The Possibility of Facing Gennady Golovkin"
"Lara's the type of fighter that doesn't need to fight 3 fights to move up in weight," explained DeCubas, Jr. "When the gates open for 160 he'll move up whether its Golovkin or rematch with Canelo, Danny Jacobs, or Billy Saunders..."
The industry speculation is that Al Haymon advises his clients to avoid fighting on HBO - but that theory has been debunked this year.
"You saw Amir Khan and Dominic Wade on HBO," said the manager. "Al Haymon does whatever is best for the client and not for him. We're not tied to anyone so the fight with Golovkin can happen at Showtime or HBO. HBO is doing a lot of pay per views because of the budget."
So how much would a possible Golovkin-Lara fight cost and would it be in the budget of HBO?
"Showtime definitely has the budget but can Golovkin fight on Showtime? I'm not sure what the budget is on HBO. Lara commands a lot of money so I can’t say the fight will be simple to make. We got to make more money than what he's made in the past for Golovkin. "
And as we all know, Gennady Golovkin is tied to an exclusive contract with HBO. So it’s the same situation of we’re witnessing with Kovalev-Stevenson, basically K2 & Main Events are unable to allow their Eastern European charges to cross the street from HBO to Showtime, even if it was for more money. Simply put, Haymon fighters can fight on HBO, if HBO are willing to fund the fights... but HBO's boxing budget was cut drastically due to Time Warner, so fighters of Lara's ilk aren't going to accept pennies for a payday to simply appease the fans.
Re: If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
I don't understand the appeal of Golovkin-Lara. Everything I imagine the possibility I end up envisaging the Lara-Angulo matchup. He eventually stopped Angulo but he badly struggled against a pressure fighter that is nowhere near as good as Golovkin.

That's not a fighter that commands major money.
All Lara's team wants to do is talk about GGG because it's easier than fighting
Re: If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
The appeal I figure would be that Lara has never lost in a clear and decisive fashion where there wasn't at least some group of fans saying he was robbed or he deserved the win. There'd be none of that in a fight with GGG because GGG would dominate and stop him.lefty wrote:I don't understand the appeal of Golovkin-Lara. Neither side has made any effort to initiate contract negotiations, but Team GGG are considered the A-side, so you should draw your own conclusions.

The GGG/Lara situation is the same as the Kovalev/Stevenson situation alright. Chickenson verbally agreed to a fight with Kovalev and HBO and picked out a specific date and then signed with SHO overnight to purposely avoid the fight and has been fighting bum after bum ever since. I think that this is an insult to Lara because no one is as pathetic as Chickenson. Re: If not GGG vs Jacobs, why not Lara ?
I'm referring to the first go-round with talks. When a date was penciled in on the schedule and HBO was actively marketing the fight. Obviously, there's been multiple negotiations between the two boxers camps. But the first negotiation, the one that was closest to come to fruition, was without a doubt, blocked purposely from Stevenson. HBO/SHO's relationship was at the very worst stage at the time. It clearly killed the chances of the fight happening. That's common knowledge so let's here whatever garbage you can use to avert that?Enlightened-One wrote:What about the WBC purse bid situation or aren't you aware about that?caldo2025 wrote:The GGG/Lara situation is the same as the Kovalev/Stevenson situation alright. Are you aware about Kovalev (as the mandatory challenger) withdrawing from the WBC's purse bid to face Stevenson?caldo2025 wrote:I'm referring to the first go-round with talks. That's common knowledge so let's here whatever garbage you can use to avert that?Enlightened-One wrote:What about the WBC purse bid situation or aren't you aware about that?caldo2025 wrote:
The GGG/Lara situation is the same as the Kovalev/Stevenson situation alright. Chickenson verbally agreed to a fight with Kovalev and HBO and picked out a specific date and then signed with SHO overnight to purposely avoid the fight and has been fighting bum after bum ever since. I think that this is an insult to Lara because no one is as pathetic as Chickenson. Not even Canelo.
