Calzaghe Is Going To Win!

Post by Arsenal »

Yeah you heard it right. All the yanks out there getting excited by their big hope. But I keep thinking of Benn v McClellen. All the Americans were giving it big time and Benn came out on top (although its terrible what happened to McClellen). I would say they got a bit hyped by Michael Grant and how he was going to beat Lewis but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Lacy is good but he hasn't fought loads of great fighters to be getting the hype he is. I think Joe is going to take Lacy to school either on points or if they trade I'm going with Joe. We have heard it all before about an undefeated, big hitting propect and sooner or later they come unstuck. Lacy can hit but can he take a punch? Joe has been in with some big hitters, has been knocked down but has always come through. Lets give Joe a bit of credit. He is undefeated and the longest reigning champion in any division. Naseem was ubeatable until he met Barrea.

Come on Joe do for us Brits and spank the Yank! :box:

The longer the fight goes the more i'd fancy Joe to win.
Lacy will be extremly dangerous in the first 4-5 rounds, he will hit harder than anything Joe has faced lately.
If it finishes early then i'd go for Lacy to be the one winning.

I think people are under estimating Joe's power. All we keep hearing is about Lacy. How many people has Lacy fought who hit as hard as Calzaghe? Thats the question we should be asking. Isn't that how it goes? Joe is champion we shouldn't be questioning his credentials. He has had enough fights and been hit enough times. Its Lacy the big hitting prospect who we should be questioning. Who has he fought, can he take a punch, can he come back from being knocked down etc etc?

Stop questioning Joe. He has answered the critics. Question Lacy's credentials because as far has I'm concerned he hasn't answered many question apart from that he has punch against level B fighters.

Jeff is a very good, tough young fighter, who is possibly the hardest puncher at SMW, unless you give it to maybe Danny Green. Jef hasn't been down in his career thus far, and has taken some pretty good shots, shook them off and came back to win (obviously with his 21-0 mark). He may not be the fleetest guy out there, but he definitely makes up for it in power, and in heart. The guy just keeps coming, no matter what you catch him with.

As for Joe answering his critics...how so? He has basically the same type of resume as Jeff, just add an aged Eubank on. Joe and Jeff have both been questioned about past opposition, and rightfully so. The thing that people are questioning Joe on is that are his out of ring issues, his hand, and his recent KD's going to effect him coming in and will the weigh on his ability to focus.

Jeff is coming in silent, and is coming to England to win, and he's not buying much of the media hype, barring the England FC jersey. He hasn't been the most approachable guy, because he seems to be very focused on winning. He took the necessary steps, including sparring with Winky Wright, to get ready for another top-notch South Paw. Will any of this matter? Who knows, but one thing is for sure that no matter the ending, boxing fans win.

I agree that Joe has beaten the better fighters, but Lacy has that look about him of being a big puncher at any level , he will be dangerous early.
In Joe's last couple of fights he has looked a bit off form early on, that might have to do with the fights themselves, they must have been hard for Joe to get motivated for, hopefully he can start out fast tomorrow and put some doubt into Lacy's mind.

Notice how most can only mention the fact that Lacy can punch but forget to leave out the fact Joe has skill, speed and definately some power.

I also notice that alot used to moan about Joe not getting a big fight or wanting it but now that he has got one they want him to get knocked out.

I'd like to see where you see people ignoring Joe has skills. Anyone who thinks he doesn't will learn on Saturday. Like I said, there's a reason he's been on top for a while, and I hope he's not willing to just give his spot up.

Does Lacy have a plan B? This is not a rhetorical question.

In many ways this fight reminds me of a 168lb version of Salvador Sanchez v Wilfredo Gomez.

Sanchez was the established champion with good skills, good technique and decent but not inhumane power.

Gomez was the squat, strong KO Artist, favoured by many "experts" to win by KO.

In the event, Gomez tried to turn it into a streetfight in round 1. Sanchez lighting sharp counters nearly KO'd Gomez in the first.

Gomez must have had the shock of his life, and wa never the same, KO'd if i recall in the 7th.

I see Calzaghe Lacy as similar, but if Joe Catches Jeff in rnd 1 like Sanchez caught Gomez, Joe wont let Jeff of the hook.

We'll see fellas.

Its great to be a boxing fan, isnt it.

Lacy goes all quiet after Calzaghe eye-to-eye

John Rawling
Friday March 3, 2006
The Guardian

If body language counts for anything at pre-fight press conferences, the dour demeanour of the normally affable Jeff Lacy, when he faced the media alongside Joe Calzaghe in a Manchester hotel yesterday, suggests he is feeling the pressure before their world super-middleweight title unification fight at the MEN Arena in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Lacy, 28, the International Boxing Federation champion, had earlier refused to appear with Calzaghe on the set of Coronation Street for a series of publicity shots to be shown on last night's ITV News and in selected newspapers. He was then close to monosyllabic in his response to questions after his rotund promoter Gary Shaw described him as a cross between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield and as "the most exciting boxer in the world".

By contrast Calzaghe, 33, who is now quoted as an 11-10 outsider by the bookmakers for the division's biggest fight since Roy Jones Jr faced James Toney 11 years ago, seemed relaxed and showed a confidence befitting a man who has been the World Boxing Organisation champion since 1997 and is about to figure in his 19th world title contest.

"This is a cracking fight, a great fight. It's 50-50 and the fans benefit from that," said the promoter allegedly who, for once, has little reason to hype up the contest to provoke ticket sales. The MEN Arena is already assured of being filled close to its 20,000 capacity. "This is the chance Joe has been waiting for, to do what he has dreamed about for a long time: to unify the titles."

Lacy's trainer Dan Birmingham said his fighter had shown a new level of dedication in his preparations, and the loquacious Shaw said Lacy was "a fighter who lights up boxing". But Lacy restricted himself to a "we'll see in the ring on Saturday" style of publicity which has proved a frustration to would-be interviewers since he arrived in Britain last week.

The American, who is undefeated in 21 fights, was at least lucid when asked about the effect of Calzaghe's huge level of support. "It doesn't worry me. I've always been the underdog," he said. "I like this event and that's why I've come here."

Calzaghe's father and trainer Enzo, a diminutive man who never suppresses the opportunity to spill out a thousand words or so when assessing his son's chances, says he spotted a chink in Lacy's psychological armour when the two fighters finally stood head-to-head for publicity pictures.

"Joe got right in his face and stared into his eyes and Lacy didn't want to know," he said. "He looked away, and I think it was the moment he realised exactly what he is up against."

Despite never losing in 40 fights, it remains clear that Calzaghe feels he has not been given full recognition for his talent and achievements. The Welshman's features are still relatively untouched by the rigours of a professional career that began in 1993 and he smiled as he said: "Saturday is the chance to show everyone who doesn't believe it that I am the best. He is a very good fighter, but I have fought every good fighter in the past.

"This is about skill. This is the next level. I have been champion for eight years and I have beaten the best opponents I could at the time. Now I am going into this fight with something to gain. I am fighting for a title and this is massive. My weight is fine. I have trained with a lot of intensity. I feel fresh and still at the top of my game. I predict that I will win."

Lacy has avoided a lot of media coverage, and a lot of media hype since he got to Britain. So to suggest his silence shows fear, or lack of confidence, is a tad trite. Jeff has always been a quiet, humble, happy guy, who keeps to himself, even during fight hype. He'll give you the typical "I'm gonna knock his head off" shit, and that's it. His refusal to appear in a photo shoot shows to me he is too focused to fornicate around with that unnecessary crap, and would rather stay locked in on tonite. I'm glad Lacy hasn't said much, or done much, as that would be outside hsi character.

I have not got involved with the Lirva33 thing before, but...you really are a twat :TU:

Back to the Lacy-Calzaghe thread..

Don`t see lacy as good and dangerous as what McClellan was when he came over here to pick up the belt off Benn, Lacy from what I have so far seen uses his strength to over power opponents..not much skill, but very effective :-?

His people so far have done excellent in picking the right opponents at the right time...and calzaghe may just now fall into that category :( ..I hope I am wrong.

I think it is very hard to pick, more so the more I think about it...but my prediction league choice is Calzaghe pts..just hope his hands hold out.

By the way, wonderfull quote by our former poster Bennie in BN this week.
"Calzaghe has been linked to more big names than Ulrika Johnson during his eight and a half year reign" :D :TU:

Come on Joe :box: :x

Yep Enzo is living in dream land with that comment I think. I doubt Lacy is intimidated too much...JC Chavez used to avoid eye contact too, but it meant nothing. And DeLa Hoya.

Mind you, Lacy might be having 2nd thoughts when he steps into the MEN tonight - it's the big stage and he better be ready: Calzaghe starts fast and will be looking to make an impression early I think, just to test the younger man's nerve.

A concern I have with Calzaghe is if he gets stunned himself, he's not likely to cover up and ride the storm - on past form he tends to fire back immediately, and that could be Russian roulete here.

Very good point Lirva. :TU:

Now, which other posters do we know who'd benefit from this advice? Hmm, I can't boxingchat think of any at the boxingchat moment, but if I boxingchat do, would you be so kind as to boxingchat pass your important point on them boxingchat on my behalf?

Only two of them thinks Lacy will win and thats Froch and Toney.

Toney mentioned the Eubank win but wasn't Eubank trying to get a fight with Toney years ago when he was at Super Middleweight?

Lacy often is quiet, surly, sulky etc pre fight. Even for the Reid fight he didn't look supremely confident. but he seems to channel his nervous energy pretty well whne the fight happens.
