Lawrence Okolie - Joshua sparring

Post by boxingknockout »

So I read that Lawrence Okolie put over Joshua hard in sparring. Yes it was on Facebook, so don't instinctively trust that - but does anyone with links in the boxing community hears thsi??

Yeah I saw a few people saying they've heard it from people "in the know".

I don't put much weight on it.

Good point. But if it's true it's a little concerning

Any possibility this was a ruse created to make Joshua seem more "vulnerable" in preparation for the announcement of a shit opponent for December 10th?

It would be a clever, devious tactic. Not exactly shocking if it was the case though.

There would be no point of this rumour just for Molina, Joshuas ego wouldn't like this rumour at all.
Truth is Whyte hasn't looked a million dollars since staggering AJ and he has not been hit flush since.
For all we know he could have Frank Bruno syndrome....... Whyte was his Jumbo Cummings

I don't know about glass - but definitely vulnerable. Hopefully he'll get ironed out by someone soon, hopefully a total bum; just to see the look on Eddie Hearn's face at ringside. I would pay any PPV fee to watch that

If he has a glass chin, he did well to hide it at the level he fought at in the latter stages of his amateur career.

I'm not saying he's not vulnerable to a decent shot, but I suspect he's no Price.

AJ was down just once in the amateurs I believe, in what was only his second or third fight, while Price was down loads of times against fairly uninspiring opposition, such as a mediocre Indian and a forgettable Welshman. AJ was rocked on his feet by Nistor and Medzhidov, but then again Price was turned into a noodle by Camarelle (AJ took his shots much better) and Stiverne.

It may be the case that AJ doesn't have a particularly good chin, and I doubt he's the second coming of McCall or Tua, but I'm confident that he's not hyper-fragile like Price, and I don't think we'd see him too bothered if Pala hit him with the same blow that sent the big guy sprawling.

I think most people would be in trouble if a 17st bloke landed a solid punch, very few heavyweights out there who haven't been on the floor at some point.

The "glass chin" cliche is thrown around way too much these days. Getting wobbled or floored occasionally doesn't mean you have a glass chin - Fury has been on the floor multiple times (and not by big hitters either) but no-one would accuse him of being chinny.

A true "glass chin" would be shattered with any remotely strong contact - solid jab, a partially-blocked hook etc.

People hoping Joshua has a glass chin is different to him having one.

As mentioned above, Cammarelle knocked glass chinned fighters down for fun. Joshua took his shots all day.

On watching the Whyte fight again, I think there's a chance some are over egging that left hook a touch. I had to re watch it because I had myself convinced Joshua was completely out and wobbling around like a pisshead clutching to anything he could hold.

He was breathing heavily in the second round though! That's more worrying imo.

Yes, but let's not pretend it's irrelevant. Getting banged over by a 200lb amateur even in sparring is significant. I don't recall Tyson, Ali, Larry Holmes ever getting put over by an amateur that weighed 40lbs less than them.....
