Jesus, Mary and Joseph!!! That is a shocker.

I must say, I am happy.

Marquez continually priced himself out of bouts with Morales, Barrera and especially Pacquaio.

Now he's lost his title and won't be getting it back I'd say.

And who's going to fight him now?

Maybe he was robbed?

fornicate, poor old Marquez, has to travel to Indonesia to get a fight for the title he held previously, and gets knocked off...

Unbeaten WBA featherweight champion Chris John (37-0-1, 20 KOs) has retained his title with a unaminous decision over former unified champion Juan Manuel Marquez (44-3-1, 33 KOs). John was able to effectively work from the outside to win 116-110, 117-111 and 116-112. More to come....

that's a very vague description from fightnews. i mean, how effective was John on the outside? i'm salivating over a more detailed breakdown of it.

anyone seen the fight?

Wow, that should put John on his way to a P4P rating with such wide margins in the score and out boxing the guy who many thought to be the best boxer at Featherweight. He is only 26 as well so many more defining fights are hopefully on the horizon. Maybe he could unify the division which will look pretty weak now with Marquez defeated the eventual move up from Harrison and general weak competition all round.

Apparently there was a couple of 10-8 rounds? Sounds strange to me, especially if there were no knockdowns. I mean, who is going to out-box Marquez to that degree? I'll be very interested to see a tape of this fight. (Assuming someone actually has one.)

Hmm, my suspicions are aroused here, I suspected he could get jobbed facing the regining champ in his hometown, I find it hard to believe John outboxed him to that extent, but having said that I've seen absolutely nothing of Chris John. Doubt there will have been many boxing press in attendence for this fight.

Will look forward to hearing the verdict of whoever was at ringside for the websites.

I've heard JMM was docked 2 points for low blows.

I've never seen JMM throw a low blow :o

John retains WBA featherweight crown

TENGGARONG CITY, Indonesia (Ticker) - Christian John of Indonesia retained his WBA featherweight title, winning a unanimous decision over Mexican challenger Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday.

Judges scored the fight, 116-110, 117-111 and 116-112, in favor of John.

Marquez was penalized a point twice for low blows. Referee Guillermo Perez Pineda warned Marquez four times before taking away points in the 10th and 11th rounds.

John, who became Indonesia's third world champion when he beat Oscar Leon of Colombia in December 2003, improved to 37-0-1 with 20 knockouts. He last defended his title last April, beating American Derrick Gainer.

Marquez slipped to 44-3-1.

116-110, 117-111 and 116-112

So lets assume that JMM was unfairly doced points, which is fair to assume as he would not have kept throwing shots low if he had been warned 4 times. 4 TIMES!! I think that's garbage.

So that makes the cards

116-112, 117-113 and 116-114

Marquz would only have gotten rounds that he won clearly, as he was in Johns hometown. Any close rounds would have went to the WBA champ john. I would think that Marquez has a case here. If two rounds were unfairly scored that makes him a winner.

Of course I am being completely pro Marquez here in order to make a case in his favour as I am a big fan. Perhaps he was just outboxed? We will find out.

I also have suspicions but having seen John fight on more than one occasion i am not surprised. We discussed this on a previous thread i seem to remember and i thought John outworking Marquez was a possibility. I am a big Marquez fan and like his style but John is a very fit guy and a hard worker, a bit like Chi but with more skill. I am not surprised if he has fairly outworked Marquez, i would like to see the amount of punches thrown during the fight because John is quite relentless at times.

However as i mentioned at the beginning of the thread i want to see the fight and judge for myself, Marquez being robbed is a very real possibility of course. But for those of you who haven't seen John, i would say from what i have seen i think he has the ability and workrate to beat JMM fairly so it's not a really huge upset in my book.

the old 2 point deductions, eh

you know, in competitive fights between a home fighter and a visitor from a different country, WHAT IS IT WITH DOCKING 2 POINTS in word title fights? leo Barber docked 2 pts vs Daruisz Mich (Germany), Virgil Hill docked 2 pts vs F Tiozzo I (France), Herol Graham docked 2 points vs Kalambay II (Italy). interestingly, all of these were exceptionally close fights where the penalized guy was the visitor. i'm sure there's loads more examples that i've forgotten.

i mean, do they take 2 pts just to make fornicating sure? what puts a grim smile on my face is that in the Hill-Tiozzo and the Graham-Kalamby, the penalized guy had actually knocked the home guy down - how many times - twice!!!!

but hey i'm just speculating...were there any Ottke fights where this happened?

Chris John seems to be a good fighter, though & Marquez can be exceptionally cautious. Apparently CJ looked far more convincing versus Derrick 'stink' Gainer thatn did Marquez.

You have to take into account that Marquez is rusty, fighting away from home in odd conditions, and wasn't really that impressive in his last outing. Add to that John's swarming style and, even with the point deductions, it looks like it might have been the kind of fight that the home fighter just about deserved to win anyway.

He was warned four times... It's not like he was given the old surprise deductions.

Could you imagine a guy with Marquez's skill over here, there would be no way that he would end up in Indonesia fighting for a title.

Seems like a waste of a career,
Maybe Marquez can come back, but who's going to defend against him?
i can't see any of the title holders being in a rush to face him

I agree steve, John is a non stop punching machine, I thought he might get a decision but not by that amount.
