In my mind, the purse bid process is likely to result in one of two scenarios:
• Jacobs refuses to face Golovkin due to the 25% purse split payday being insufficient, resulting in him dropping the WBA “regular” belt
• The purse bid goes ahead, with K2/HBO being outbid by Haymon, resulting in GGG dropping his WBA “Super” belt, because of contractual obligations
K2 needs to work with HBO to have the second scenario figured out. If K2 bids at least $6 mil and Haymon outbids them, then Golovkin will get at least $4.5 mil of Haymon money. He should then be able to "share" $1.5-$2 mil with HBO compensating their revenue loss. If Loefler can't get some kind of agreement like that with HBO pressing the mandatory situation, then he is totally worthless and Golovkin needs to drop him ASAP.
You could be right, but the “HBO exclusive contract” obstacle is regularly cited by Kathy Duva as the reason why Kovalev can’t fight Stevenson, because Main Events couldn’t afford to lose the purse bid when the Russian was the mandatory challenger to Adonis' WBC belt, as Sergey is only allowed to have his bouts televised by HBO.
Pacquiao was once instated as the mandatory challenger to Mayweather’s WBC welterweight title, but Top Rank withdrew and decided to go the WBO route instead, and one of the reasons cited was due to Manny’s an exclusive contract with HBO… and they couldn’t afford to lose the purse bid to GBP/Haymon for the same reason as Kovalev.
What you’re proposing sounds feasible, but I suspect that HBO may be unwilling to compromise on contracts, based on their track record.
