The Duran of the Hagler fight vs GGG/Toney/Hopkins/Jones

Post by DareTBG »

I get shit for this at times but I honestly think the Duran of that night would show GGG moves he's never seen before. OK GGG might eventually plough through Duran but I honestly think Duran could make him look bang average. Infact I think he almost certainly would even if he does lose. Duran on points and probably wide imo.

Another great match up I think would be Duran of Hagler vintage against James Toney. Those guys would be tearing it up on the inside trying to out slick each other. Stylistically that's a dream match up imo. Toney close points win in a skills fest for the ages.

Hopkins would probably struggled to negate Durans intelligent inside work at times but he's crafty enough himself in that area to know how to spoil Duran's offence enough to edge most of the rounds. Hopkins footwork would caus Duran no ends of frustration and he'd get the better of most of the exchanges at mid range. Yeah, Hopkins wins via UD but Duran has his moments of genuis.

Stylistically Jones is an absolute nightmare for Duran as he would be for almost everybody in his prime. Jones would pick Duran appart at range and make him look shot to shit. The ref steps in to stop the fight mid to late.

I do think the Duran-Hagler fight isn't as close as what some people make out but Duran was very crafty and competitive against arguably the greatest middleweight of all time in his absolute prime. So good was Duran that night Hagler went on to say he earned his PhD in boxing after fighting Duran.

Duran-Freddie Steele is another great fantasy match.

Obviously they throw up all different styles but that performance was fantastic, there's no way a 5'7" former lightweight should have been able to have been so competitive, both technically and physically, with one of the best, career middleweights in the history of the sport, at the peak of his powers.

I'd probably find it hard to weigh them all up stylistically, but none of them would have had an easy night with him that's for sure.

GGG would be second favourite for me, absolutely needing to find the sweet spot to stop him, if he were to get the win.

Toney or Hopkins could have spoiled and slipped punches but they'd both lose on points IMO.

RJJ has the best chance, I reckon, keeping him at range and attempting a similar strategy to Leonard in the 'No mas' fight. Could RJJ make Duran quit?

Nice break down. Interesting that you think Duran could edge out Toney and Hopkins. It's certainly possible if Duran's on his A game. Duran could outwork Toney that's for sure. Hopkins is the harder task as he's so crafty defensively. Not as slick as Toney defensively but certainly more crafty with lots of tricks up his sleeve.

The Jones fight is the one I just can't see Duran winning, or even being competitive. Stylistically it's a nightmare for Duran. Duran still had all the skills in the world but he had lost that edge in footspeed and athleticism up at middleweight. He would need to be Montreal sharp to get to Jones imo. And no Duran wouldn't quit. He learned his lesson after the backlash of No Mas.

What about Duran vs Monzon?

I'll admit, I'm probably not the best man to call that one, I just don't rate Monzon as highly as others.
His achievements are fantastic, his resume up there with the best but when I watch him fight I just struggle to see him hanging head to head with the very best, I don't know if it's his style I just don't like.

I pick Hagler over him 9 days out of 10. Duran ran Hagler very very close, I think that same Duran beats Monzon. But as I say, I suspect my opinion is slightly skewed.

Duran may not have been 'prime' against Hagler, most would probably agree late 70s Duran was at his best. But I think given the physical disadvantages and considering how good Hagler was, that was arguably his finest performance, even in defeat.

The great Roberto Duran's problem versus all of them would've been the weight and lacking speed. He was great against Marvelous and he trained very hard, but age, THE WEIGHT, and physical disadvantages were his biggest problems against one the true monsters of the middleweight division. People forgot that the Hands of Stone's GREATEST UNDERRATED ASSETS WERE SPEED and DEFENSE.

He doesn't lose to the James Toneys, GGGs, Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins of the world because they were better skilled. No, Duran was way more skilled than those 5 guys combined. Those guys would be just faster, younger, stronger, taller and bigger against him, that's all.

The great Carlos Monzon would have destroyed Duran at middleweight. It would have not been a fair fight for The Hands of Stone. It would be over in round 11 or by a wide unanimous decision. King Carlos would be too big for him. A real nightmare.

Some defeats are greater than wins. Hagler-Duran is one of the best examples of that.

Most likely would have lost anyway, but is better at 147 and 135th.
In these categories was excellent, especially lw.

I agree 100% with your assessment Duran is more skilled than all those middleweight greats combined. In terms of completeness Duran could well be the GOAT. I'm not so sure Monzon destroys Duran though. Duran would caus him problems early. Monzon was a psychopath though. He wouldn't be fazed by Durans superior skills in the slightest. No one really took Monzon out of his game plan. Monzon was methodical but very effective because he had zero emotions. The total opposite of Duran who could be effected in the ring emotionally.

If Duran had never fought prime Hagler no one would ever imagine him being able to at times out hustle, and have a highly competative back and forth with prime Hagler when discussing fantasy matches in the future. Everybody would chose Hagler to walk through Duran. Duran if on A form could very well beat lesser Middleweight greats than Hagler through his sheer skill and ring craft alone. GGG for example wouldn't know what hit him if faced with the Duran of the Hagler fight. Even an older middleweight version of Duran was able to beat on a monster middlweight in Iran Barkley which is an absolutely ridiculous feat if you think about where he started.

I'm talking real way things are and the fact that it's very difficult to 160 won.
Larly be realistic.

I meant to say this in my response. and it's part of the reason the performance is so impressive.

Even knowing the result years after the fight, when I watched it I couldn't believe Duran was so competitive.

If I watched it live at the time, I'd have given Duran absolutely no chance what so ever

Excellent post.

I am an unashamed Duran fan, but the disrespect being shown to Golovkin on this site is moronic. If Tommy Hearns can switch Roberto off the way he did, then don't anyone kid themselves GGG couldn't comatose Roberto with ease.
He could potentially knock him out. But I think it's a stretch to say he does so with ease. In fact as we're talking disrespectful, I'm surprised anyone who claims to be a Duran fan would argue anyone ices him easily.
GGG is a fantastic fighter and I said in my point, he could do it if he catches him sweet, but that is no easy task and he'd take some awful punishment trying to find that spot.
Let's not forget Hearns was a magnificent fight too, not just a heavy handed fighter.

Duran was excellent but we should not overdo it. He was beaten Benitez, Hearns and so that they could, and those mentioned. They are simply too big for him.

Duran would get knocked out cold or stopped by each of these much bigger, stronger men... In the 1st round by Golovkin.. In the 1st round by Toney.. by the 8th round by Hopkins.. and by the 5th round by Roy Jones.. The reason is they're all WAY too big and tall for Duran, just like the chinny and available Tommy Hearns was.. Even Toney would have 3 inches on Duran (he was bigger and taller than Hagler) and would just smash the lil' tyke to death instantaneously.. You can add Carlos Monzon to that list because he would have crushed Duran as well.

You saw that Duran didn't have a snowball's chance in Hell versus Hearns, right??? And Barkley beat Hearns twice but lost a squeaker to Duran... Why is that??? Because Barkley couldn't box very well and was a very poor attacker...however Hearns made himself available by trading punches with Barkley and Hagler.. They were both tall and strong enough to reach Hearns' glassy chin, where Duran wasn't.. Hearns could be tagged with KO punches by big guys who could punch hard, but he was a fair enough technical boxer that a shorty like Duran couldn't reach his vulnerable chin in a million years...and Duran wasn't big or strong enough to pose a threat to Hearns by trading punches ... It's classic style dynamics...

Hagler fought Duran's fight and boxed him all the way.. That wasn't the best game plan for a little guy.. Hag may have stopped RD if he went after him a lot harder.. You're supposed to beat up smaller, weaker opponents---and get rid of them pronto.. Hag made the same mistake with Leonard.

Golovkin, Toney, Hopkins, and Jones were all bigger, taller, and stronger than Duran---having bigger advantages than Hagler, who was a small Middleweight... And they could all box 10 X better than Iran Barkley.. They all had very good jabs which would control the much shorter Duran... They all had nifty rights, that could rain down on Duran from on high like nobody's business... Ray Leonard beat Marvin Hagler, but immediately gave up the Lineal Middleweight Title Belt, just like Canelo did -- except Leonard NEVER defended his 160 strap... Leonard had NO interest in facing the top Middleweight Contenders: Michael Nunn.. Mike McCallum.. and Julian Jackson, who were very tough to beat... Leonard eventually went back down to 154 to fight the supposedly chinny Terry Norris---who Julian Jackson had iced in an earlier fight---so careful cherry-picking doesn't always work that well... As Leonard-Norris was happening, Nunn, McCallum, and Jackson owned the splintered Middleweight belts.

I don't know whether or not elmer has smoked crack but I suspect you might be if you can't see the obvious validity of his statement.

Toney.

This guy finally manages an MD win over 36 year old Mike McCallum, looks shite against Nunn and Tiberi. Have you got him down as more skillful than Duran?

GGG.

Extremely powerful puncher, and technically very clever, but matching Duran for skill? In your dreams.

Hopkins.

If you consider spoiling, fouling, and brawling as great skills, then he is your man.

Jones Jr.

I think you might be confusing unbelievable reflexes with great skill.

Getting KTFO aged 33 in your 83rd fight against one of the best L / Middles ever, when you started out at 135 is nothing like as bad as getting KTFO back to back by 2 guys of the calibre of Tarver, and Johnson, who both come from the same division you have been fighting in for 8 years. That is what happened to the so called " great " Jones Jr when the reflexes deserted him and he had to rely on his " skills "

By the way I think you might find elmer also mentioned Carlos Monzon, who he also claimed would be too big, and too strong for Duran. So that would indeed make 5.

Great boxing skill is hitting without being hit. Jones was absolutely superb at that. Roy was a superb boxer. To say that isn't great skill is idiotic in the extreme.

GGG can only fight guys brave enough to enter the ring with him... Sanders... Jacobs... Canelo... Eubank... Peter... Cotto... Martinez... Mayweather etc. all ducked him up until now... Kell Brook was a 36-0 Welterweight Champion who's a great boxer-puncher, and makes a good sized Middleweight... GGG got rid of him in 5... In contrast, smaller Welterweights: Carmen Basilio, Ray Leonard, and Emile Griffith---who each had plenty of losses---beat ATG Middleweights: Sugar Ray Robinson, Marvin Hagler, and Dick Tiger.

Tell that to Lou Del Valle, Tarver, Johnson, Danny Green, Denis Lebedev, and Maccarinelli. I suspect they would laugh even louder than me at that crap.

If you are going to talk about a guy with great skill who could hit and rarely get hit, try Mayweather.
You know that most boxers take more punches and lose fights towards the end of their career don't you? Duran did, Jones did, Ali did, Louis did, Robinson did.

Ok bb I agree with u GGG is better than Ray robinson, sick tiger and Hagler and Kell brook was better than srl and griffith

Have you been smoking crack or something? :OhYes: Combined? Really?

Oh, and by the way. you only listed 4 boxers, not 5.
First, you don't know nothing about boxing.
Second, I know through the history of your posts that you don't like the great Roberto Duran
Third, watch Duran fight an you will learn something. In HIS PRIME, Duran was a COMPLETE FIGHTER that none of the guys mentioned in this topic would have beaten him if they were in Duran's weight range. What a fighter he was. The best of the last 50 years if you ask me. I am not alone in that sentiment
Fourth, you think fighting like the greats Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard is truly boxing. Going backwards and running around in circles is not boxing, but surviving. Fighting on the inside is an art, not running and jabbing like Ali, Leonard or the great Roy Jones, Jr.

Defence is an art!
A lot of this is a matter of taste and Duran has certainly been excellent but it's been better if you ask me. I respect him very much but I do not agree that the best last 50 years.
Duran was one of the most exciting fighters, certainly.

Everybody got their own opinion. To me, he was the best fighter, pound per pound, of the last 50 years.

Who do you think in your view was the best boxer of the last 50 years? I will respect your opinion.
