ERIC, while you're here, never had chance to ask you, were you jaw-droppingly surprised by Frank Maloney's decision to tranform into Kelly or did you see clues along the way?ERIC GUY wrote:I just thought I would have a little say on this subject,
AJ was a novice champ, won ABAs, and world silver, olympic gold in about a 6 year period...who went on to become a world champ, he is still learning...
LL was an outstanding amatuer before he went pro, Lennox had an extended amateur career before going pro, the fights that he wanted were blocked, he got paid $6 step aside so Tyson could fight Ruddock rematch,
as people know me on here, I was with LL from the start of his career, so know a little bit about the background of his fight career

But the comparison just there was to Bruno, who was a distinctly inferior mover to Joshualefty wrote:I dont think Joshua's movement is that great personally. Technique wise and build they are very similar but AJ has massive confidence in his own ability which Bruno lacked. That's half the battle at elite level.

Re: How does Joshua match up with Lennox Lewis?
Bruno was definitely not as robotic and stiff as AJ. He was clearly more mobile on his feet for a start. Bruno was also more fluid with his punches and possessed the far superior jab. I would also give Bruno the edge in power and punch variety. Bruno has this reputation of being slow and stiff because he was in an era with Mike Tyson, and he comes across as a bit slow in interviews. He was far better than people remember. If he was around now and had more of a badass persona then the casuals would be creaming their loads over Bruno's bum destroying prowess like they all do with AJ.Counter-puncher wrote:But the comparison just there was to Bruno, who was a distinctly inferior mover to Joshualefty wrote:I dont think Joshua's movement is that great personally. People forget ^. Look at those ko's via Left hook, straight right, overhand right, uppercut, left hook to the body and an absolutely brutal double left to the body.
I have no doubt Bruno would beat AJ if he was around today because he was better in nearly every area as is evident on film.

For me Bruno is better than Joshua. Joshua is terribly overhyped. We have a very poor heavyweight division at the moment.

It might be poor but its more exciting than 4,5 or 6 years agoTheLeprechaun wrote:For me Bruno is better than Joshua. Joshua is terribly overhyped. We have a very poor heavyweight division at the moment.

Wilder, Wlad, Klitschko, Haye, Joshua, Povetkin, Parker, Ruiz - you wouldn't take any of them to beat the versions of Tyson or Lewis that Bruno fought.
Ortiz may be the boogie man who is quite a bit better than everyone but he must be in his late 40s.

Thanks for that, the ko compilation definitely shows a much quicker Bruno than I remembered, mostly tho they were.earlier-career? The only Bruno fight I have seen since it happened is the Lewis fight, and IIRC the Bruno who fought McCall or Lewis was much more musclebound and lumbering than in those ko clips.

No problem mate. You're probably right but I do believe even the more bulked up version of Bruno is quite a bit more mobile and fluid than what AJ is now. I remember Bruno giving Lewis a hard time tbh but I'll need to rewatch that fight to freshen the memory.Counter-puncher wrote:DareTBG wrote:Bruno was definitely not as robotic and stiff as AJ. Edit: Just watched a highlight video of Lewis vs Bruno and he definitely has more bulk about him. Got to love that jab of Bruno. When people talk about UK boxers with great jabs Bruno definitely deserves to be mentioned along side Ken Buchanan, Lennox Lewis and John Conteh. Lots of people consider Lewis to have an ATG jab and Bruno out jabbed him in that fight.

Re: How does Joshua match up with Lennox Lewis?
I haven't seen Bruno Lewis in years, it's some left hook he takes just before the end.
Re: How does Joshua match up with Lennox Lewis?
The uppercut when he has Bruno hurt on the ropes was brutal as well. Bruno didn't shame himself in that fight. Gave what would become one of the greatest heavies of all time a bit of a fright. Lennox probably learned a lot from that fight.TheDarkDestroyer wrote:I haven't seen Bruno Lewis in years, it's some left hook he takes just before the end.

He didn't realise the error of his ways until McCall sparked him.

Re: How does Joshua match up with Lennox Lewis?
Lewis lost to Rahman after being late to training because he had gone Hollywood and thought he could make a movie when he should have been training. He did not make that mistake again.
With McCall he underestimated his opponent.
