George Groves's physical condition

Post by lefty »

Is it just me or does he look in pretty poor nick here by his usual standards?

He looks very gaunt. Don't think he's done the weight right but it's always easy to read the wrong thing into a weigh in.

On the other hand, the hat??!!??

He looks like a big novelty nodder!

I am told that he doesn't like being told what to do in the gym.

Interesting that Keith. Wouldn't hugely shock me if true. Shane Mcguigan comes from a strength and conditioning background himself and I imagine there's a S&C coach of good standing who they have onboard aswell. Frampton always looks in tremendous condition so it can't be the team he has around him.

didn't he fight above the super middle weight last time out ? He didn't look that honed then either .

Still expect a Groves win tho'.

I don't think he's ever been in amazing condition visually, but then again, I get the feeling he doesn't drain much. Calzaghe was never cut, but his fitness told a different story.

I remember Froch talking about his running routine after their second fight, and I've long suspected that that was the key to his wins. I've no doubt that Groves trains hard, but I don't think he's a naturally talented athlete, just a naturally hard puncher. Before he retired, I'd have bet big on Froch against Groves in a parkrun! Maybe in front of 800 people.

'Course, that's only part of the story; Steve Robinson's a brilliant athlete to this day.

Interesting, as I'd never really thought of Groves as a banger at world level, but his jab when it's got it on point is a thing of beauty.

Not even when he knocked Froch down hard? He's always had a rep as a hard hitter, Groves.

This will be a long hard nights work for Groves I think so I hope his fitness is spot on and has trained as hard as ever. Can't imagine McGuigan camp allowing any shortcuts.

Saw an interview with Barry Mc and he was saying he had never seen Groves looking like this in the gym, he said that Groves was hitting ridiculously hard and destroying sparring partners etc, also mentioned that Shane was suffering on the pads and stuff and had to seek some physio to try and deal with Groves.

Who knows, take of that what you will but thought I would share.

I take your point, but on the flip side he hasn't stopped a single one of the world class opponents he's faced. He''s a stiff hitter, but his biggest wins have been driven by boxing ability rather than power, which is where I felt the original post was a little bit misleading.

I actually agree. His big knockdown of Froch was from a hard punch that Froch didn't see.

I also think he looks in terrible condition in the picture.

With a little research you'll realise Shane McGuigan actually invented the sport of boxing.

His first knockdown of Paul "Smigga" Smith was his best shot.

But Eddie would have us believe that smigga is world level. So he has KO'd a world level fighter in eddies world.

I love George's jab when it is on point just like froch 1 when it was setting the right up all night long before groves got cocky and tried standing toe to toe with Carl.

Can I get clarification please. For George not looking ripped and the second coming of Van Damme it is bad for him as he may have over looked training etc, but it is bad for joshua to be the humble Ivan drago as his muscles zap his energy.

I'm confused.

I think George is a pale individual anyway and he has never been the sort to look a million dollars on the scales, personally he looks the same as I have seen him look before and it does not seem to coincide with a bad performance particularly. Still tonight will tell I guess as Energy Eddy will keep coming, however he does over reach dramatically and can see Groves landing at will if they have not corrected that. Inside Eddy is tough and a tad on the dirty side which George won't like but he should be able to do some damage if he gets the jab going early and waits for the visitor to over reach.

Watching IFL's interview with Groves yesterday or the day before when asked about his training camp instead of the usual 'yeah, it's been great' it was a slightly hesitant 'yeah, good, a good camp.' I am sure I am looking into this too much but a fairly comfortable nights work could be quite hard if Groves isn't near top fitness.
