To be honest, I tuned in for the first minute or so, took one look at the terrified Italian's face and turned it off.

He's a fragile champ though - the 2nd Green win was good yes ( the first very lucky ) but aside from that he's been matched VERY carefuly.

Note the Germans are willing to bring new middle champ Abraham out of Germany later this year - that's because he's the real thing - unlike Beyer and......yes, Ottke :TU:

Calzaghe, Lacy and co would blast nice guy Marcus right out of the water. Which would be a pitty, as I'd really miss those Rock God Waynes world style ring entrances of his.
I remain unconvinced of Abraham, at least as of now. He won a razor-thin decision over deteriorating Eastman that would have gone Eastman's way had the fight been in the UK, and Ikeke looked totally unprepared in their match-up. He sure can punch, but people get to easily impressed by knock-outs. I doubt Abraham can rumble with the best. I feel Winky Wright or Jermain Taylor would make him look stupid, and even Felix Sturm might be too much of a challenge.

Ikeke is far to big to be fighting at 160. Look at Stipe Drews, a man of relative size, and he fights 15 pounds heavier. Ikeke at 6-4 should be no lower than SMW, maybe even LHW. He has to cut far too much muscle to counter his bone length to make 160.

Abraham reminds me alot of Juan Roldan - even better though I reckon. His last two fights - 50/50 very tough matchups - prove he's one to seriously trouble the top boys.

Sad to say it, as much as I hope Joe wins another for us back in Wales, I think Lacy may be too hungry and strong.

I think Joe will meet him head on though like he always does, and one man will go down. I really can't decide who will win, but for the sake of the predictions league, I opted for Lacy KO4.

Fcuk it though GO JOE.

And Pundit, please stop going on about Ottke, we all know you love him.

I didn't write anything about Ottke here, but as you insist: the winner of this fight cannot be considered the sucessor to the great super-middlweight champ Sven Ottke.
Why that is I promised not to mention until Saturday (to mattyp). :TU:

I really expected to see more partisan (nationalist) votes on this fight, but both sides of the pond are seeing it as a 50/50 fight....I have a feeling there will be tons to talk about Sunday and Monday.

I'm going for Joe late KO, between rounds 8-10. Doubt hell stand toe-to-toe with Lacy, he'd be playing into his hands, i expect him to box more in this fight.

my take as well...looks like the voting is going 55-45 in favor of calzaghe here, which is about what i would expect!!

british fans tend to be more knowledgeable & realistic than those from many countries!!! :TU:

It's 55/45 here, and in Current scene it was like 58/42 for Lacy....that's about as even as you can get.

i really hope the refereeing doesnt prove to be a factor in this!! if it doesnt, i see lacy by late stoppage...if it does, who knows!! IMO mosley-vargas should have been allowed to go longer, especially considering the closeness of the scorecards!!!

I keep changing my mind.

Lacy seems to fight hyped up, in a rage. Look at the way he lets off steam after the fight. If Calzaghe can use that sheer aggression against the guy, he has a good chance. Lacy has an improving repertoire of shots, especially the body shots and uppercuts. So you don't want to stay in punching range. As he's so pumped up, he could come out very wild, and JC may be able to see some of those winging shots coming, that Lacy throws from outside.

If JC can read Lacy's shots and find a space to counter, he could have Lacy off balance. If he can find a way to sneak in some real hard punches, he can let Lacy know that he can't just walk in. Make a pressure guy think twice, you have a shot to take over and control the tempo. Joe would have to fight a perfect fight, but if he turn Lacy's aggression into frustration he might have him where he wants him. Also, with Calzaghe's shots coming from the other side, Lacy will have a whole new set of problems to deal with.

Lacy's looked awesome vs Williams, Reid and Pemberton. but he's still unfinished technically. I think Calzaghe has a lot of belief in his own abilities that borders of the arrogance, that can help him on an occasion like this. Providing he doesn't get caught up in Lacy's heat, or injure his hands, he can win. But you know, maybe asking Lacy to take his game to the next level puts him in a similar boat to Joe, who must recapture that formed he showed in 2003.

I only hope the winner doesn't fight Tarver. There's loads of good fighters at s/m (Kessler, Beyer, Bute etc)

i've been leaning toward lacy all along because i think joe calzaghe has his best years behind him (his career-defining fight vs eubanks was 8+ years ago) and most of his recent foes have been at or below the same level as lacy's recent foes...

another element that could help lacy is preparation & i dont think there is any better pre-fight prep than lots of sparring with a masterful southpaw like winky wright...altho winky is much smaller, he is a defensive master!! even tho he doesnt have calzaghe's power, i dont think there is much calzaghe can do that winky wright cant do & that's why i see him as the ideal sparring partner for jeff in this match....

I don't know how much Joe has left, he's looked quite poor in his last couple of fights, and his hands have also given him some serious problems.

I've always held Calzaghe in high esteem, he is ultra talented, and if this fight had been 3-4 years ago, I figure he would box Lacy's head off and then finish him off down the home stretch.

There are question marks over Calzaghe, his age, his hands, his desire, must all be questioned and either one of those could be the deciding factor - I think we'll know after the first round has ended whether Calzaghe still has it or not.

Still, I'm going to pick Calzaghe to produce a career best performance and win with plenty to spare :)

I haven't had the chance to see this fight but every report I read (including those in the UK) said Abraham won convincingly - and I'm writing that as someone who wanted Eastman to win!

There are two sides in me that battles it out on who I want to win.

The european in me wants Calzaghe to win, while the boxingfan wants Lacy to win since there, IMO, are better chances of further unifications if Lacy have the belts.

The European seem sto win, so I will predict a points win for Calzaghe.

You see his last fight vs Colajanni or whatever it is? The guy ran around for 10 rounds or something, and fianlly gave in and got fornicating dropped.
Beyer-Colajanni was considered a joke matchup even in Germany. they booed that fight and how does he get away with fighting such a poor foe when there's so much progress being made in the division? get off your arse Beyer and Do something quick. it's not like Beyer has Ottke level popularity so if this guy really cares about more than just good money/low risk then he Needs to win a big fight

i concede, beyer is a good, tidy boxer with some skills. but he's always been considered the weak link when it was Calzaghe/Ottke and now when his peers are Calzaghe/Lacy and Kessler.

if Jeff Lacy wins tonight, I hope that Tarver loses to Hopkins. I don't want Jeff - if all goes to plan - to get lured up to fight that big stinker who thinks he's fornicating great, when s/m is such a fertile ground. i still find myself rooting for Calzaghe, even tho i've been pissed off with his career since I got Sky in 2004. I appreciate Lacy but haven't warmed to the guy.

Joe is defintely one of the best fighters to ever come out of the UK. I think most in the UK fight game would agree, even if he's none to popular for various reasons.

I think he'll cement his legacy in 5 days time....tick tick tick
And so it came to pass :TU: :D

At least a few people of here picked Joe, but looking at the internet writers and trade press, around 98% got this one badly wrong.

Dont believe the hype!

What a beat down that was. Really turned out like Duran/Moore in the end.

Lacy was a valiant figure in there - I was feeling sorry for him by the 9th round and his corner were truly pathetic. He's not going to pay those bums is he? Should've pulled him out there - may have ruined a truly brave fighter for good.

JC is pound for pound right up there now - no arguments. It's been a loooonng time coming.

Best UK born fighter of all time? Could be.

And please no more mention of Ottke :TU:
