Ward really reminded me of Calzaghe tonight in the way he was able to adjust his tactics and timing in the later stages of the fight.

To be fair, they are pretty much united in their calls of a robbery.
I dont think it was a robbery though. I thought Kovalev looked good in the early rounds and then was blowing out of his backside and I thought Ward looked distinctly average by the high standards he has set over the years. A draw would have been a good shout i think but neither guy winning a close decision would have been shocking imo.

Also you have to take into account that quite a few of the people who post in there have an odd eastern European fetish for some reason. I'm not talking about the decent posters but people like Freedom.

Firstly like to say what a fantastic fight.. Few things that I think about this fight..

1) The Ward punch and grab then Wrestle is against the rules why wasn't he warned about it.
2) Commentary why can't anyone be impartial. Most sports are impartial why is boxing so bad. Numerous times they were exchanging shots but only Wards shots being recognised..
3) If a fights close which most rounds are surely the aggressor get the nod.

Few people said to me about Wards boxing skills apart from a few very nice single jabs Ward was very very messy and spoiled Kovalevs work.. The harder shots came from Kovalev... I had Kovalev by 5 rounds it's simple they landed with similar amount of punches. (Kovalev a little more) but Kov threw loads more and done a lot more damage. Wards face is a mess and Kovalev barely had a mark..

I don't think it's a robbery the rounds were close... The fans boo'ing then most people thinking Kovalev won tells the story

I really need to get some sleep soon, but while I remember I will say that Kovalev was absolutely poo at cutting the ring off; he was just following Ward for the most part.

boxingknockout wrote:Sky were terrible tonight - so biased towards Ward, calling every shot he landed whilst largely ignoring Kovalev's punches. If I could be arsed, I would count the number of times Sky called Ward's shots compared to Kov and then compare to the punchstats. I reckon they were biased about 4-1 Ward, even though Kov on punchstats outscored Andre by 126-106 (I know punchstats are not that great.)

Smith was his usual growling fool self without any analysis of value and talking way too much. He really knows very little about boxing, just growls rubbish.

I usually like Paulie but I think he was swayed by Smith's nonsense.

I had Kovalev winning by 2 rounds, so not the worst decision ever, but one of the worst commentatories.
I don't think Paulie was swayed by Smith, he's just a poo commentator. Favours the fighter closest in style to himself at all times, doesn't take power into account because he had none and he's a patronising, arrogant bellend on top of it, anyone that has a different opinion must be missing something or simply wrong, like when he started banging on about how anyone scoring it to Kovalev must have been missing Ward's bodyshots. He's a prick and the sooner Sky eff him off the better.
Interestingly I remember him scoring a fight as a wide UD against McDonnell in a fight where I scored McDonnell winning almost every round very clearly, I mean clear cut he landed 5 punches the other guy landed none rounds.

He then tweeted later on to say he got the scores wrong.

I quite like him as a commentator and before a fight he is very knowledgeable about fights and fighters but I think during a fight he tends to get carried away and score everything for the fighter he starts leaning towards.

The result aside which I think was fair Paulie did seem to be lording everything ward did and ignoring much of kovalevs work.

He was right in what he was saying about effective aggression and people scoring fights for the person going forward regardless of if they are landing. however if it's a pick em round I would score the fight the to the fighter who is forcing the fight rather than scoring a draw. I'd only score a draw if it was either a stand off or a toe to toe round.

I thought Kovalev edged it. All the wrestling tired him out an took the snap out of his punches late on but I thought he landed more significant blows.

Adam Smith spent the whole fight commentating on other peoples' scorecards. He could've done that sat on his arse at home and given me his ringside seat

He's terrible. Talks for the sake of it to fill what he perceives to be 'dead air' and then once in a mindset, won't deviate for anyone or anything.

I watched a american stream , and bob sheridan and the other yank commentator both thought it a robberry and so did i ,, Ok Kovalev seemed to tire but Ward did'nt pick it up . he was getting hit with straight lefts , watch rnd 10 again thats a rnd i actually counted punches landed Kovalev easy , and it was the tempo of the fight .. Ward came back and fair enough some he deserved a draw , or even win the rnd , but he did'nt win that fight ,

He's hardly a random Russian. He's an HBO fighter with American promoters & trainers. He's lived in America for about 10 years.
Yes, that's why the judges only screwed Kovalev by giving it to Ward by one round and not 5. :yay: :TU:

The cs guys are going bat shit crazy  despite the fact their own poll has 40% of people scoring the fight for ward many of them are convinced everyone who scored the fight for ward is stupid and corrupt.

However a lot of those guys do also think lizard people secretely run the world and that miley sirus and Beyoncé are their leaders.

Kovalev was the aggressor the entire night, stalking him. Ward looked horrified and hurt. And he took a champion's belts in that manner. I did not see one absolutely clear round for Ward. Worst part is that in CS, the Europeans were stammering about Kovalev not going to get a fair shake by American judges and I took offense and spouted off about that being total nonsense and it will be an honest judgement etc. I haven't gone back yet to face the music.
