Virgil Hunter: "C'mon you know the drill, we're not here to entertain!!!"

Post by Barra »

He said this to Andre Ward at the end of round 2.

I've never heard those words uttered before in boxing.. I think these words ask interesting questions about what a prizefighter wants, what they want to achieve. And what the fans want.

I guess my question is vague, what do you make of Hunters comments? :TU:

It's something that EVERY basketball coach in the hood tells his team.
EVERY ONE.

In basketball it means, stop doing fancy stuff. Set picks, play D, talk on defense ...
you know, focus on the fundamentals that lead to victory.

Only boxing, mostly due to an increased appetite for violence, are people shocked by such a comment.

Kovalev stuck to his gameplan more strictly than Wards.
But just because Kovalev has power, his gameplan is entertaining ...

Cool guys, I know what it actually means. My question is meant in a deeper sense, though. Think about the question more philosophically, like what we want from the sport as fans, and what fighters want from the sport as prizefighters.

not there to entertain. Must be nice as a fighter to be paid so disproportionately highly to the general interest in you.

Why do you blood and guts guys keep trying to talk for everyone in the sport?

I want a prize fighter to be skilled.
I want a professional fighter to look like he's doing something an amateur can't do ... like both Ward and Kovalev.

Gatti/Ward type fights ruin boxing because it creates the same idiots,
who only want dunks and threes ...
who only want long passes in football ...
who only want home runs in baseball ...
who only want goals in football ...
who only want candy apples for breakfast, sugar for lunch, and hard liquor for dinner ...

It's really childish to not understand that there is a balance to everything.

No, I'm asking a deeper question than Gatti/Ward fans.

Pro boxing is prizefighting. It's entertainment. It's not a sport. It's like buying a ticket to a show, theatre, gig, circus, etc. Of course, winning is extremely important to the market value of that fighter when selling their next fight, but so is the entertainment they provide, probably even more so.

I'm interested in the comments Virgil Hunter made because it's the first time I've heard it said on camera. It's like a 'Taboo' in pro-boxing.

I'm interested in what people think about the implications and meanings behind it.

I was thoroughly entertained by that fight. What Virgil was saying is essentially Al Davis' "just win, baby."

You do realise you're completely wrong yes?

He was talking about the knockdown saying 'don't worry about a knockdown... don't even entertain it' i.e don't let it get to you.
