Is Ward P4P #1

if he still operated at 168 he would do it again, no one in that division today can beat him.Horse wrote:That was ages ago.CaptainSpacerod wrote:You can not be serious.

I don't for the life of me see how golovkin can be considered the p4p number 1.ginty wrote:Would the best fighter on the planet get manhandled like he did in the first 2 rounds? For me ward went down P4P not up . As for who's number 1 I'd say Gonzalez or Golovkin I like the look of lomochenko but it's to soon if he he does a number on Walters he could be up there .
Andre Ward has beaten AA, Froch, Kessler, Dawson, Kovalev - gaining 7 world titles between 2 different weight classes. How does GGG compare to that? he hasn't faced an elite opponent and doesn't appear to be in a rush to do so, from what I've see I think guys like groves and degale give GGG problems and Ward would absolutely school him. Kovalev is an absolute monster compared to GGG.
Re: Is Ward P4P #1
Agreed, its in the eye of the beholder. To be fair to Mayweather, i dont recal a fight where he stunk the joint out as bad as Andre did Sat night, for all his safety first, pot shotting tactics, he never put up such a dismal performance as Ward did.Boxerbeetle wrote:Maybe not what you want, but Mayweather was P4P #1 for many years whilst employing exactly those tactics.ALI wrote:Prior to the fight, i was of the opinion if he beats Kovalev he is P4P#1.
After the fight i now disagree, first i thought he lost the fight, second i thought he fought far to negative, hardly landed anything and was content to try and sneak rounds, not what i want to see from a P4P#1.

Exactly agree. I think he did win and kovalev is a beast. I cant believe the negativity for a guy prepared to fight the most dangerous fighters around. We all wish he was more active, but its like people have forgotten he stepped into a super six with the best around at his weight and he won! To enter the super six at that stage of his career showed huge stones. Now beating the most feared champion a weight above, Ward is an animal.G0mez wrote:If you think it was the right result, then he takes top spot.

I'll be honest mate if Ward was active he would no doubt be P4P 1. He mastered the whole hit and not hit tactic. He was rusty and thats why Kovalev dropped him
Re: Is Ward P4P #1
Ward does not deserve to be called an animal.95gerog wrote:Exactly agree. I think he did win and kovalev is a beast. If you don't think he won (and you're in a clear majority with that opinion) then you can't have him as p4p number 1. You could arguably have him above Kov even if you think he lost given what he did at 168. Personally I thought the winner of this fight would move to number one. But given how close the fight was, and the fact I felt the wrong man won, I have trouble rating either fighter as number one.

Pound for pound is a load of shite anyway. My favourite fighters rarely end up on a pound for pound list and p4p fighters like Floyd for instance are exactly the sort of overpaid safety first diva fighters that I dislike.
Re: Is Ward P4P #1
No he's not, he may not even have deserved the big win last weekend
Re: Is Ward P4P #1
I was confident that the winner would be my inarguable #1, but it turned out not to be the case. I thought Ward would take a clear 8-4 type of decision, but I had him losing by 3 and in my view to win he needed to be given every benefit of the doubt as the renowned boxing genius.

Yes I've got him number one. Probably helps I had him winning on Saturday.
My top 3
Ward
Gonzalez
Golovkin.
Ward beating Kovalev and Gonzalez beating Cuadras are the two best WINS of the year.

Re: Is Ward P4P #1
I'm really struggling with my p4p top 5 let alone my number one.
First off, the conflict between ability and achievement.
On ability alone Rigo, Loma, Usyk and Inoue would be right up there but haven't done enough.
Chocolatito, Canelo and GGG have put together the better body of work but haven't faced and beaten quite the level of a Ward/Kovalev type opponent.
Ward and Kovalev has been the highest ranking pair to meet so you could argue the winner goes top on the strength of that win but the win was so utterly unconvincing there is next to nothing between them and I'm not convinced either should be considered more talented than the names previously mentioned.
Add to that list Crawford, some of the names at welterweight, Pacquiao still being pretty impressive and having a CV that tops them all and the likely re-appearance of Floyd Mayweather and it's a right fvcking headache
My favourite fighter is Golovkin, so bollocks to reasoning, he's my no1

Re: Is Ward P4P #1
Ward is better p4p than Kovalev. Mainly because he's smaller than him and matched him ( at least )
Re: Is Ward P4P #1
You could argue, he's the same height, weighed in at the same 175lb.lillywhite14 wrote:Ward is better p4p than Kovalev. Mainly because he's smaller than him and matched him ( at least )
He only fought one weigjt class below and had naturally outgrown that weight class
And you could also argue Kovalev won
Re: Is Ward P4P #1
That argument only works for me if Ward can go back to 168 lbs effectively.lillywhite14 wrote:Ward is better p4p than Kovalev. Mainly because he's smaller than him and matched him ( at least )
If he has no choice but to fight at 175 lbs, then he should simply be judged as a light heavyweight.
Re: Is Ward P4P #1
That is fair enough, but for those of us who thought Kovalev won it is more complicated.PredatorHayds wrote:Yes I've got him number one. Probably helps I had him winning on Saturday.

I can't have Ward number one as I thought he lost that fight, yet I can't have Kovalev and number one as he lost the fight officially.
I'd say Gonzalez should be number one with Ward, Kovalev, Golovkin and Canelo in an unspecified order underneath.
The winner of Lomachenko vs Walters will probably be worthy of leapfrogging them all into second. Provided there is no controversy, of course

Re: Is Ward P4P #1
Regardless of who won, I think the Kovalev-Ward fight was just too close to give a definitive answer either way. But I also think that Golovkin is better P4P than both, but needs a defining win to really prove it.keirw wrote:That is fair enough, but for those of us who thought Kovalev won it is more complicated.PredatorHayds wrote:Yes I've got him number one. Yep this is the problem. Kovalev won the fight but three plonkers gave it the other way. How can you have a bloke at number one when he clearly by the majority consensus lost the fight?
