Should drug cheats be banned for life ?
I think it's reached the point where this whole drug taking situation has become a joke.
Boxers are getting popped left, right and centre. Browne was popped again today (not surprised) what do you feel should be done ?

Agreed mate, the worst thing is when you take the drugs and have packed the muscle theres nothing a ban can do. 6 months later you will still feel the effects from using PEDS.ginty wrote:i don't get why world boxing is so soft on drug cheats with 6 month bans then allowed to box again , for me there should be at least a 2 year ban for first offence and their purse from the last fight taken as a fine and if it happens again a life time ban

Depends on what they've taken. If it's a band stimulant that's in an Over the counter supplement or something that's been taken inadvertently then a second chance.
If they've deliberately taken anabolic steroids then several years at the least they should be banned as it will be several years(if even ever) that the advantage gained will be lost.
But then lets face it- you ban someone for 2 years and they don't compete- what sort of testing will they be subject to in they 2 years? Some will probably do even more drugs safe in the knowledge they won't be caught and come back with a huge advantage.
Coincidentally I was actually speaking to a pro and arrrangibg sparring this morning with someone whose been banned for a few years as a result of steroids and will be back soon.

When the top lads fight once or twice a year a 6 month ban doesn't actually mean anything.ginty wrote:i don't get why world boxing is so soft on drug cheats with 6 month bans then allowed to box again , for me there should be at least a 2 year ban for first offence and their purse from the last fight taken as a fine and if it happens again a life time ban
Re: Should drug cheats be banned for life ?
I voted yes but i think there has to be a certain amount of nuance... i think there has to be intent to gain an advantage behind it for it to be a life ban - and not just from fighting, they can never be a ref/coach/manager/cornerman/promoter. None of it.
i think intent would be clear or be able to be established from the circumstances. Fury getting on the shovel is not the same as a boxer taking PED's to enable him to gain an unfair advantage. People can die, as we all know all too well. you train to put yourself in a position to injure the other fighter more efficiently, hurt him to the body, render him unconscious, what have you. Thats enough in itself without secretly putting stuff in you to help you do that better.

I would say yes, ban for life. If you cant win by cheating then go eff off. Or join a sport specially developed for cheats.
Re: Should drug cheats be banned for life ?
I voted yes because too many times these soft bans happen then they repeat offending anyway so 100% life ban for ped offenders
Re: Should drug cheats be banned for life ?
2-time offenders should be banned for life...
Re: Should drug cheats be banned for life ?
Agree. If it's blatant then first time should be a hefty fine and ban. Do it again and you're done!greg wrote:2-time offenders should be banned for life...

I must admit i know very little about PEDS but could it just be a case of boxers taking stuff by mistake, maybe stuff they have taken for a while suddenly becoming a banned substance.I know ultimately they should check what's safe and what's not,but is being a bit lazy for not checking really an offence ?,i'm not sure.
Re: Should drug cheats be banned for life ?
The drug Lucas Browne has been caught with is legal but banned from pro sports. It's also contained in lots of other legal supplements that many gym goers take. Imo unless it can be proven he's deliberately taken the stuff he should get a lengthy ban for being stupid enough to take supplements without having them verified first.bigjack wrote:I must admit i know very little about PEDS but could it just be a case of boxers taking stuff by mistake, maybe stuff they have taken for a while suddenly becoming a banned substance.I know ultimately they should check what's safe and what's not,but is being a bit lazy for not checking really an offence ?,i'm not sure.

Generally speaking, Yes.
But like any wrong doing, it has to be weighed up on a case by case basis.
Accidentally talking the wrong type of cold and flu meds or asthma inhaler is slightly different to Larry Olubamiwo using all steroids in the entire Borough of Hackney

Re: Should drug cheats be banned for life ?
I voted no as I have made mistakes myself in life and tend to err on 2nd chances, but I would like a decent long period of banning. But equally I can agree with those that take the view how a lifetime ban may be a stronger deterrent. Interesting one. Glad it's not my call. I do think boxing is rife with drug taking however.

2 yr ban then 5yr ban then out for good.

Tarvers bans get shorter every time he gets caught.
Testing needs to be improved. There's a lot of high profile fighters blatantly on PEDS who haven't tested positive.

Fair enough mate a lot of people will agree with what you said second chance if it was genuine mistake but if itbwas blatant use of sterioids a ban for lifecmdenny wrote:I voted no as I have made mistakes myself in life and tend to err on 2nd chances, but I would like a decent long period of banning. Agree with that. Anyone doing it after being caught should never be allowed in a ring again.kbackup408 wrote:110% if you get caught twice thats it, banned for lifegreg wrote:2-time offenders should be banned for life...

A 2 year ban for first time offenders. A lifetime ban for the 2nd offence.
It's a disgrace that Guillermo Jones is still allowed to box, hasn't he tested positive 3 or 4 times now?
