Should Lacy Have Been Stopped???
Watching Saturday nights fight, I thought that Jeff Lacy was allowed to take far too much punishment by the ref and his corner. Only his bull-like strength allowed him to continue to the final bell. I'm not sure I can remember a fighter taking such a sustained battering for the whole 12 rounds, and remember Joe Calzaghe isnt exactly feather fisted. For me, the fight should have been stopped around the 9th or 10th round, it was obvious Lacy didnt have the strength left to deliver a KO punch, and had no chance of winning on points.

Absolutely - Lacy's corner had no compassion - this was a dangerous beating as well as a career wrecking beating - psychologically and physically.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Lacy's corner should have pulled him. I doubt he will ever be the same after that beating.
It was like Duran v Davey Moore, without the fouls.

The onus was on the corner to pull him out.
The ref had to ask himself is this man still fighting and defending himself? and the answer was yes. Just because he had no chance of winning the fight on points is not sufficient reason to stop it.
It reminded me of the Harrison v McCullough fight.
I would have liked the Lacy corner to look after their man and pulled him out.
I do wonder what was going on in the US camp. In the last round, Gary Shaw could be clearly seen giving a gesture to the Lacy corner on several occasions that could only mean ‘Get him out of there’ but they either ignored him or didn’t see him.
And if Shaw wanted him pulled out, why wait so long?

Mentally that has got to be hard to recover from. Lacy really thought he was going to mullerize Calzaghe coming into the fight, and got the rudest of awakenings.
By the end of the 1st round, Lacy was already a beaten man, you could tell by the body language that he was thinking 'damn, this motherfuckers like shit off a shovel!" and had absolutely no idea what to do. He had no clue what to do on the inside, which for a guy with his build is a massive drawback. Calzaghe just tied him up on the inside.
Gutted that I set the video recorder, but the tape ran out before the main event.

Right - and has there been a fight with such one sided scores? Take away the ridiculous point deduction and the scores would have been 120-105. 120-107...jamesmcdonnell wrote:Mentally that has got to be hard to recover from. Just cannot remember ever seeing that. Lacy had no real power in his shots after the 6th round or so. How was he going to turn it around against a guy he couldn't hit and with a great chin.....
I think he point deduction was good enough, you are not allowed to punch behind your back. I wonder if Lacy had been clever and just pretended to be KOed by that shot, if he would have won by DQ?E wrote:Right - and has there been a fight with such one sided scores? Vic Darchinyan won a 10 round fight with these scores: ~ 100-83 | 100-84 | 100-88 ~ I have never seen anything like that before.
Mike McCallum did that in the James Toney 2nd fight & got deductedFreiheit wrote:I think he point deduction was good enough, you are not allowed to punch behind your back. That is ridiculous - it is hardly a dangerous shot (no power) and a warning was more than enough. I mean most refs do not take a point off even for a bad low blow or a deliberate head butt.....viciousmaussa wrote:Mike McCallum did that in the James Toney 2nd fight & got deductedFreiheit wrote:I think he point deduction was good enough, you are not allowed to punch behind your back. I thought the ref was actualy quite biased towards Lacy.
I think they should have pulled him out around the 10th, the referee was biased in that he gave Lacy every chance to carry on well beyond the point which he should have done. His corner should have been more compassionate. I hope its onlt his ego which is damaged by this, I've not seen a more one sided fight which has gone the distance for a long time.

It is very unusual for a fighter to be docked a point without even receiving a prior warning.E wrote:That is ridiculous - it is hardly a dangerous shot (no power) and a warning was more than enough. Lacys corner was pretty terrible... they seemed to be overwhelmed by the cut eyes, only working on one at a time which for a world champions corner is unbelievable!... and they definately should have pulled him out by about the 9th or 10th rounds... I got seriously worried for Lacys well being by the 11th round... even if he's ok physically I very much doubt that he'll ever fully recover mentally from that beating...

Whilst Lacy is a vaunted puncher and could in theory have turned the fight around with one punch, he had suffered such a beating that after about 8 rounds he was too weak to land the KO punch he was looking for, and had less than no chance of winning on points. The fact that he lasted to the end is testimony to his enormous courage and strength - the guy was too brave for his own good. His corner and team are a disgrace - Gary Shaw was only shouting for it to be stopped at the end. The ref was a disgrace as well - he could have waved it off earlier, and had a perfect opportunity to do so after the knockdown which would have been too late. The ref was crap and should never officiate a fight again. I just hope that Jeff Lacy's health doesnt suffer after the excessive punishment he got on sat nite

I think the ref was definitely biased towards lacy - did u notice how he kept tapping lacy's ass at the end of some of the rounds? I reckon he basically saved lacy from being stopped in the last round by intervening when i tiny bit of tape was coming off lacy's glove... calzaghe was really getting some momentum but the ref suddenly called a halt to the action.

Not only that, he showed very little business sense as well. Investing all that money in Lacy, then having no foresight that his fighter was horribly in over his head - which was sharply apparent even before the halfway stage. A fighter can lose years in the crucial minutes they're fighting from nothing but instinct. The sad thing is it isn't that surprising with Shaw; to be honest, I expect he and Finkel probably flew from Manchester to Manilla yesterday: "sucky, sucky - more money". Gross.silkov wrote:Yeah, Shaws face at ringside was a sight to see... he looked like a kid who'd had his sweets taken away. He only tried to get Lacy pulled out in the last minute of the fight, which is pretty awful really... he showed very little compassion for his fighter...
I agree, the big pause for the tiniest bit of tape loose was crap refereeing.black panther wrote:I think the ref was definitely biased towards lacy - did u notice how he kept tapping lacy's ass at the end of some of the rounds? I thought the ref was good on Saturday night, the only thing he could have done was maybe stop it after the knockdown in the 12th, He couldn't really call a stoppage before that as Lacy was still throwing shots back.
Wouldn't mind that ref back here doing a couple more of the big fights, he seemed to have things well in control there.
Another wide one was RJJ v Reggie Johnson, all three cards were 120-106

Lacy should fire his entire team. How can you throw such a limited, unexperienced fighter to the lions at this stage of his career.dr_devious wrote:Watching Saturday nights fight, I thought that Jeff Lacy was allowed to take far too much punishment by the ref and his corner. Inexperienced?...he'd had 6 title fights already?... he just wasn't good enough... he's hardly a baby at 27, 6 years as a pro and a long Amutuer career!!!.....pundit wrote:Lacy should fire his entire team. Whatever, he wasn't ready for JC, and his team should have known this.silkov wrote:Inexperienced?...he'd had 6 title fights already?... he just wasn't good enough... he's hardly a baby at 27, 6 years as a pro and a long Amutuer career!!!.....pundit wrote:Lacy should fire his entire team.
