The problem with boxing and what really frustrates the dyed in the wool boxing fan is the fact that when a boxer reaches the elite level, and is fighting for huge sums, they should be fighting boxers of similar ability who can present them with a real challenge. In other sports, the top exponents play each other. Not in boxing. Joshua is fighting a man who has no chance of winning, indeed Joshua's last few fights have been like this and he and his team are earning huge sums due to people paying money without understanding the facts.

It's always really narked me the "casual" tag .

What buisness is it of anybody's how much somebody else watches fights ?

A lad I work with will watch it on tv maybe once a month and I wouldn't call him a casual , I'm glad I have somebody to chew the fat over on a monday morning about procedings on a said weekend .

I would say the more people that take an interest in boxing the better !

After being involved in boxing for over 50 years , in one way or another , I'm happy to announce I'm a casual , and intend to remain that way. Big fights that interest me, and the odd boxer, i've took a shine to and want to follow ,, Other than that i'm not lining a promoters pockets , when he serves up shite

Its simple really i would'nt go to the local store and buy his veg , when i know its always rotten , would'nt go buy 2 day old bread for the same price has fresh bread.

And i certainly would'nt buy a ppv or a tcket to watch AJ destroy a handpicked opponent in 2 rnds , .

I have mates who are still p!ssed off because they went to bed rather than stay up with us to watch Tyson Douglas.

Mismatches & upsets happen in boxing. It's all part of the fabric of the sport.

We can all say how great Joe Louis & Ali were but both their reigns were full of blokes who had no chance of winning. There was no way a 7 fight novice like Spinks is going to beat Ali.

I can understand the frustration of these type of fights in the PPV days but there is an option :D
There is an option not to watch it. But there is no option to watch a real fight. Bellew should be fighting Bredis or one of the champs. Instead he is going after retirement cash in a circus act. Se we the hardcores dont get to see a good show because those casuals are too stupid to distinguish a fight from a farce.

Problem with that is that only hardcores know that there are such a things as casuals. Casuals themselves are completely oblivious of that fact. So I think its better to sell T-shirts: I'M WITH CASUAL ->

I dont know if it will be good but it certainly will be meaningful and intriguing. A fight between title holder vs top contender. Bellew v Haye though not only is meaningless and utterly predictable but will almost certainly not be a good fight. Same like Hayes previous two fights or even more like Audley bullshit, with lot of shouting and aggravation. Then they will step trough the ropes, Haye will hit Bellew like a train and it will be over in a jiffy. Its a con and it requires gullible casual fan to make it happen.

The sport needs casual fans though. What gets me is that the likes of sky don't educate them properly and just feed lies. Not just GGG v Brook being close but fighters being better than they are. This whole believe everyone is world level and it's embarrassing to be anything less is so wrong.


As I say about whether a fight is close or not just check the bookies.

Casuals watch Sky and Sky PPV

Hardcores only watch allegedly and hate anyone who buys a Sky PPV, as they obviously know nothing about boxing and just want to bum Fast Eddie

All jokes aside however; I have seen people who do actually seem to be fans of Matchroom and hearn versus being actual boxing fans per se. It's rather bizarre. You see it on both twitter and also in the comment section of IFL videos. It's a strange phenomenon.

I agree very much with this. It's great to talk boxing with anyone who loves it. There is a snobbery in every sport, forum or hobby though where serious hardcore fans look down a bit on followers that are not so obsessive.

I bet even in train spotting there are snobs who snort at trainspotters who have never logged the 5:30 am from Inverness to mctweedles or whatever.

Another poster also said that we all start as 'casuals' anyway - we only get hardcore after years of wasting our time reading everything we can about boxing, and watching every show we can. I seem to remember staying up late to watch a recorded Virgil Hill vs Jean Marie Emebe fight that I already knew the result of at 3am. (I may have the details wrong but something very similar anyway).

Long live the boxing fan of all levels!

I think it comes down to time on a daily basis that a person puts into the sport. Whether that be taking part in some capacity, watching or reading/forums. I don't watch as much boxing as I used to and wouldent say I was hardcore ---but definitely more than casual

I think if you put a boxer like Bradley Skeete on the box with a casual and a serious fan in the room, their attitude to him would be totally different.

The casual would be frustrated about his lack of knockout power. They'd probably conclude that he was boring. And in fact, many on here have over the years.

The serious fan; whilst acknowledging his lack of concussive knockout power as being a hindrance, would maybe satisfy themselves with his slick foot movement, his jab and his general ability to counter punch.

To take that line of thinking a step further we DO understand the bullshit & realise it's ALWAYS been that way.

Loma v Walters was meant to be a great fight.

Haye Bellew is meant to be shite.

But you never know in boxing which turns out to be which so why whinge?

If I look forward to fights then at least I have a couple of months of happy anticipation :D

If it ends up crap then I just start thinking about the next fight.

Life is a short journey. Keep it simple and positive :geek:
