The Rise & Disappearance Of Juan "El Pollo" Valenzuela

Post by Taansend »

Anyone remember this man?

He was a Mexican journeyman who scored the odd upset along the way - a 1st round KO of Julio Diaz who at that time had only lost once on a split decision to Angel Manfredy - and was a 22 year old with a 15(6)-6 record.

Then suddenly, in shades of Wales's Steve Robinson, it all started to kick in. He first beat highly touted prospect Ricardo Williams Jr - who was an American Silver Medallist in Sydney 2000 - and thought by many to be a future multi-weight Champion (Williams would later end up in prison for trying to sell cocaine via FedEx :o ). This was no pushover. At the time Williams had had eight bouts (& 1 no contest) against very decent opposition with a combined record of 121-18-3 and was shite hot.

He then stopped a 17-3-1 Brian Adams from New York, outpointed Eleazar Contreras Jr who was a top contender who had beat a couple of world champions. He won all bouts after losing to El Pollo including beating Gregorio Vargas - who had beaten Paul Hodkinson, Tracy Patterson, Ben Tackie & went the distance with Floyd Mayweather.

After that he stopped Ernesto Zavala (18-2) & Guillermo Valdes (12-1) and then VANISHED.

He was all over the boxing grapevine but just stopped fighting. He had a comeback fight 3 years later (a draw against a fighter with a 8-12-2 record) then vanished again.

Effectively his boxing career was all over before his 24th birthday. He seemed to have all the skills to become a serious contender but just stopped.

Does anyone remember him or have any later info on him?

Thanks

Some other sites say he had a detached retina

"Juan was quickly moving up the world rankings by defeating 2000 U.S. Olympian Ricardo Williams and knocking out top contenders Julio Diaz, Ernesto Zavala and Guillermo Valdes. Juan Valenzuela was ranked among the top ten in the world and was scheduled to face current World Boxing Association Champion Miguel Cotto when during the pre-fight eye examination doctors discovered that Juan had a retinal injury. Juan’s eye has been treated by specialists and he has been cleared to make his comeback and reestablish his role as a major player in the Jr. Welterweight division. Valenzuela will resume his career under the management of Norman Kaplan, Mike Jacoby and David Wolfe out of New York. Valenzuela’s return to the ring is scheduled for eight rounds vs TBA."
