Re: Ward v Kovalev - Who Would Win The Rematch?
I think I'm right in saying, that individual commissions advise on how to score rounds, rather than the governing body.
It's an odd situation, I wonder whether the unified rules throw any light on the actual criteria, I know what they are, but there's little clear information on how they should be applied.

I score for quality and quantity of the shots. The force is a tricky one. For example, how do we know for sure how hard a body shot is?jamesmcdonnell wrote:I think it's time to dig out the criteria again, I have to say, I am not even sure they are all listed in the same order by each commission. Actual shots landed must be by far the biggest criteria surely though, as well as quality and force of those shots.keithmoonhangover wrote:When I score a round, I score on punches landed and defence, making the other guy miss and blocking punches.
How many rounds do you think Ward was more accurate in? Eleven. In every round except for the second, Ward landed a higher percentage of punches and Kovalev landed a lower percentage. For eleven rounds Ward blocked and made Kovalev miss more than the other way round.
On the night I had Ward by a point or two. I've watched the fight twice since then and scored it both times for Ward by one point. The record books agree with me.

I believe the result would be the same as the 1st fight
A clear points win for Kovalev
A clear points win for Kovalev

First lay off the codeine and red wine together, then the codeine, then maybe the red wine. Then consider getting a retina transplant, new eyeballs, a new brain, or all of the above.keithmoonhangover wrote:When I score a round, I score on punches landed and defence, making the other guy miss and blocking punches.

It's interesting, nowhere can I find anything more than a general list of things that rounds are scored on, which is the old
Clean punching
effective aggression
ring generalship
defence
No weighting of which should be scored more is mentioned.
Boxing scoring is way too vague one could ask the following
Clean punching - is more weight given to the harder shots - if so, how is this ascertained, by the effect on the target
effective aggression - how much of this is actually the above - surely aggression is effective when you land shots
ring generalship - a good explanation of this is needed, controlling the fight in what way precisely
defence - this is the only one which is pretty self evident

Re: Ward v Kovalev - Who Would Win The Rematch?
History suggests that at this level, the guy who performed best over the second half of the first fight generally wins the rematch in less controversial fashion. I think second time around Ward still nicks rounds, but without a knock down he winning margin is slightly wider. There is nothing to suggest Kovalev would win by KO in the second fight. The longer the first fight went on, the less likely a KO looked. Ward had the better stamina of the two, either that or his body shots were taking their toll on Kov by the end more than Kovs shots were on him. Who is likely to improve for the second fight? Ward is younger and was inactive going into the first fight and had not fought world level opposition in years. With that now behind him he should improve. He made mistakes early and got punished, but managed to get back up and adapt enough to convince the judges he won the fight.

I haven't been on the codeine for quite a while mate, it's been Tramadol, Gabapentin and most recently Lyrica for a fair but now, as I wait for more surgery - not on my eyes though, I am sad to report.Riddick Blowe wrote:First lay off the codeine and red wine together, then the codeine, then maybe the red wine. I thought SRL beat Hagler pretty clearly. He was more active, threw and landed more shots for most of the fight. People always bang on about Hagler coming on strong, but he'd left himself too much to do. The other line is 'SRL's shots never hurt Hagler' however, this isn't a scoring criteria, and also how do they know. Hagler never showed any weakness in the ring anyway.keithmoonhangover wrote:I haven't been on the codeine for quite a while mate, it's been Tramadol, Gabapentin and most recently Lyrica for a fair but now, as I wait for more surgery - not on my eyes though, I am sad to report.Riddick Blowe wrote:First lay off the codeine and red wine together, then the codeine, then maybe the red wine. Good point, judging the weight of body punches on the inside is particularly difficult.keithmoonhangover wrote:I score for quality and quantity of the shots. The force is a tricky one. It's still a bit odd to extrapolate about a fight you haven't watched. And make assumptions about those who have watched it.magwitch wrote:Norman Stanley McDonnell, you are charged with commenting on a fight on Boxrec without having watched itHorse wrote:You don't know how dull the fight is, because you haven't watched it.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I'm ambivalent, I've not watched the fight, I watched the first couple of rounds, but because I know how dull the fight is, and the result, it's a hard watch. I'll try and watch it in full tonight, but it's a pretty dire hour of my life gone forever.
I'm just saying I don't think Ward is scared. It sounds like there were a lot of close rounds there, some which people felt shouldn't have gone Ward's way, but it doesn't sound like a fight anybody dominated, which was entirely expected, well by me anyway, Ward is too tricky for anybody to dominate him.
I'm not a fan of Ward, he is awful to watch, I appreciate his talent, but it's not a pleasure watching him.
Why are you commenting on a fight that you haven't watched?
Bizarre behaviour.. How do you plead?
Come on Horse, hardly a crime is it? I do it all the time![]()
I never did watch Mayweather-Pacquaio because I could imagine how it went. But I didn't offer my opinion on it.
Re: Ward v Kovalev - Who Would Win The Rematch?
The fight was deadly dull. I'm a big fan of good technical boxing, but this wasn't it for me - Ward can box very well but resorts too quickly to holding and wrestling, while Kovalev didn't seem to know how to cut off the ring (and it not as if Ward's feet are particularly quick these days). While I give credit to both for facing each other, and I can see that this was a big event, it certainly wasn't a classic fight (and I'm a bit surprised by the Boxing News editorial this week that seems to think it was). No-one will recall this fight in a couple of years' time and I certainly don't want to see a rematch. Can we have a "don't care" option added to the poll?DannyMCR wrote:Ward seemed uninterested when questioned in his post-fight interview.ALI wrote:This.Ian1973 wrote:Kovalev. I think he'd force the issue a bit more next time. I thought Ward really struggled with Kovalev until the Russian seemed to run out of gas in the last couple of rounds.
Kovalev will be more aggressive in the rematch, i think he will stop Ward. Will be interesting to see if Ward's team try to get out of it, not sure they will fancy it as much as they are trying to show they do.
Being honest, any title fight involving Andre Ward doesn't interest me in the slightest, not because of his defensive style but from all his grappling. Disgusting to watch.

Agreed, it was a stinker, i expected much better from Ward. As good as i think he is, he went down a little in my estimations after this performance.olij999 wrote:The fight was deadly dull. I have mulled rewatching the fight to see if i would score it differently on second viewing, but i cant bring myself to go through that again, it was like watching paint dry!
