The worst kinds of cartoons were those pre-1930 sketches that depicted African American boxers. I see some in old newspapers at it just amazes me how racist the country it was then.

Re: Boxing Cartoons

Looking at old Los Angeles and San Francisco newspapers,
one gets the idea that just about every big city newspaper
had sports cartoons devoted to local events. The San
Francisco Chronicle had some good sports cartoons
during the late 1920s and early 1930s while the Los
Angeles Examiner had some great cartoons devoted
to boxing events taking place at Hazard's Pavilion
in Los Angeles during the years of 1903 and 1904.

i have been collecting this stuff for a while and the US papers had artists doing work on a range of sports boxing and baseball in the main. It was a very good means of poking fun which I think was half the appeal to people. Some were very racist as well on the boxing, as was the reporting also.the quality of some of the work is very high and I have framed quite a few and given them a gifts.

a lot were issued as postcards and again very good work.
