LACY OVER RATED, & GIVEN A BOXING LESSON

Post by KO Artist »

I know I said 1st rnd KO for Joe. If Lacy had a less than excellent chin, it would have been.

Lacy is a strong kid with a good chin. Dont think he will contend again. He took a bad beating

I compared him to Tony Sibson, but he's not as good as Tony.

Well done Joe, best demonstration of boxing I have seen in years.

Lacy wasnt a terrible contender, but Joe has faced better.

But you thought this kid was do good he could knock Calzaghe out easily? It is not that Jeff Lacy is that bad, he got taken to school by a man who is one of/is the best boxer in the world. Joe's tactics were perfect dont leave your chin out to be tagged and you'll win :TU: It was all about Calzaghe last night it was up to Calzaghe how he made Lacy look.

don't forget what lacy did to reid - you know, he battered a man who pushed the two most successful s/m champs in Calzaghe and Ottke all the way. lacy was very good. almost all of us agreed that pre fight. it's just that Calzaghe was exceptional.

I know for a fact that Reid hardly trained for Lacy.

Look at my prediction on Current Scene, I said this would be one of Joe's easiest fights.

Lacy should stick to modelled swimwear based on last night's "performance"...

Calzaghe was exceptional, but Lacy was so clearly over-hyped.

You might be right - but I'd certainly we rather minimized the latter observation and maximized the former.

I don't want anything to take away from what Calzaghe achieved last night. He was sublime.

Very good point. It seems Lacy caught Joe on the wrong night, on Joe's best night, and couldn't cope.

Hometown decision

I hold my hands up and admit i have been a bit of a Calzaghe basher at times but that was only because of the dire opposition he has faced, once he stepped into a meaningful clash, a 50/50 fight which i think this was i supported him all the way. He gave Lacy a first class beating, Lacy was made to look like Samuel Peter, just pushing his thick neck in and throwing big swings. Calzaghe outclassed him all night, his speed and punch picking was sublime and the way he showboated and even teased Lacy at times made it all the sweeter for me, really shut them up!

Calzaghe should fight Tarver next, he could go for Woods's IBF belt to try and get Tarver into a unification but Calzaghe has a genuine chance versus Tarver if he can maintain that workrate and punch output because i doubt Tarver could cope. Does anyone know what Lacy said afterwards? Bet he had a moan about Calzaghe's tactics given his grimacing in there at times.

Clinton Woods would get hammered.

He ain't in that league.

Joe should fight Glen Johnson or Tarver.

I only mentioned Woods so Calzaghe could get hold of his IBF belt to force a unification mate, i agree Calzaghe would win.

On another note i think the ref was bit crap at times, in the 12th he saved Lacy from a stoppage loss by getting some none existant tape removed on his glove, there was nothing there hanging?!

Woods can fight Johnson and Joe can fight the winner after warming up on Jones.

Respect due John.

You're the only one i saw predict categorically that this would be a onesided display of complete domination.

I saw a UD for Calzaghe but i thought Lacy make it very tough every step of the way.

Good work :TU:

woods is at least a B+ world class fighter. look at those dominant wins over Hoye and Gonzalez! it's a perfect fight for Calzaghe and a tougher one than Lacy. Woods is a very tidy, well rounded boxer. Joe looks unbeatable in a physical contest (see vs Woodhall, Byron, Brewer) but a big, good boxer can give him all sorts of trouble.

a below par Woods held prime Glen Johnson to a draw. yes he was behind going into rd 12, but he battered the fornicate out of Johnson in the final round. He should've got a 2 point rd even if Gj didn't go down. and GJ did go down, even though IJ Lewis never acknowledged it. Woods is a fine boxer these days.

Hear hear old boy!

Lacy looked shit, but it was because Calzaghe didn't allow him to do anything. His footwork was superb, he left Lacy lumbering around the ring flapping at thin air, and his punch placement was fantastic.

As you say Ian, sublime performance, one of the best ever by a British fighter, and probably the best I've ever seen in my lifetime.

I'm dissapointed that people are focussing on how poor Lacy was, look at the man who made him look so poor as the reason the fight turned out the way it did.

if Lacy is so bad, then isn't nearly everyone a thick smeg for saying how good he was?

no, it's because Joe was so good. Makes me wonder what would have happened if he'd landed a major fight between 2000-03, as he was faster and fitter back then, and didn't struggle with the weight as badly.

I agree, it's good being wise after the event but a lot of respected people picked Lacy. Look through Boxing Monthly, there is a wide range of opinions, from Lacy outboxing him or stopping Joe. Calzaghe's performance was sublime as has already been said, i take nothing away from him...he took on a genuine fellow champion and owned him. Respect due :TU:

I am not sure about drawing comparisons between Calzaghe-Lacy and Trinidad-Wright. I thought Wright gave Trinidad a boxing lesson and always maintained full control from start to finish whereas Calzaghe gave Lacy a sickening beating. I don't remember thinking Trinidad-Wright should have been stopped at any point as Trinidad was taking a pounding, but on Saturday Lacy's head was just bouncing back and forth from power shots.

Terence wrote: Steve, I though it was similar in that Joe absolutely befuddled a harder hitter with accurate blows and good movement. Joe did go inside at times yet mostly held onto the right-arm of Lacy, a justified tactic not a "trick" as some Americans have claimed. I still think my point stands even if you say Joe beat him up worse than Wright did to Tito as the fact remains that Joe should have put the guy away in much the way that Hopkins did versus Tito. Tito did not look like he was going to go versus Wright but may have done with a little more pressure, Lacy looked gone a few times yet still heard the final bell so in my book Joe does not tick every box. Few fighters ever do no matter how good the fight.
Well I think that a more compassionate corner, or a better ref would have stopped the fight, thus 'putting' him away, plus the break he was given by the ref in the 12th also saved him from being finished. For me, for all intents and purposes Calzaghe did as much as if he had stopped him, no missing tick here.

Does it occur to you that perhaps Lacy has a phenomenal capacity to take punishment? A stoppage win might have been more impressive, but christ, it's not like Joe was holding back is it?

Fair point Terence, i suppose what i was trying to say was the way Calzaghe-Lacy went i found myself whincing at the screen watching Lacy getting battered, i don't remember that in the other fights mentioned. Hopkins-Trinidad is one of my favourite fights but i don't recall fearing for Trinidad's health the way i did for Lacy's on Saturday. Calzaghe had a frightening intensity to his punches the way they were delivered with such ferocity one after another. Hopkins gave Trinidad more of a meticulous beating which culminated in a stoppage, Lacy also should have been stopped for my money, but that's a different matter.

I can your perspective mate and also feel that the way Jeff marked-up made many of us wince even more. To be fair to Tito he fought closely with Hopkins for a few rounds but Lacy just got dinked from the first bell. Tito may also be 1-D but is so in a far more accomplished way than Lacy. I see Lacy and I see David Reid in many ways.
I think it depends on where Lacy goes from here. If he realizes his mistakes in this fight, and works to improve areas around them as not to be so glaringly apparent, then he could once again challenge for a title. However, seeing as the other beltholders besides Calzaghe all fight an outside style, and are much quicker than Lacy, I expect him not to be in the ring in a title fight at 168 any time before 2007, maybe 2008.

Had Lacys corner pulled him out round about the 8th or 9th I think you could still hold out a hope for him to come back, but really those last 4 rounds may just have been too much to overcome... that is very possibly a career ruining beating and if Lacy does come back to win a title it will be very impressive I can't really think of fighters coming back from such beatings to win titles again... I wish him well but fear the worst regarding his future as a boxer...
