Quite how having taken part in the sport makes you an expert on it I don't know, top level sportsmen are creatures of habit, everything they do is instinctive and they can't really explain it which is why you rarely see great players make great managers as it requires a different brain. Thierry Henry talking tactics is hilarious because he knows jack about it, I'm surprised managers put up with the criticism sometimes, I mean if your car broke down you wouldn't ask Damon Hill to fix it would you? So why ask Andy Townsend what Jose Mourinho's doing wrong?
Producers don't care about intelligent analysis they just want recognisable faces to tell the public that the Premier League is the best in the world and that GGG vs Brook is the new Hagler vs Hearns.

Adam Smith is the only boxing commentator that I genuinely can't sit through. Maybe I'm biased but I just find him beyond dire. He is as bad as a pundit / host, he just comes across as a complete fan boy or someone trying remarkably hard to portray themselves in a certain way.
He's done ok behind the scenes but he should very much stay there.

Yep as are Froch, Moore and Smith as were McCrory and Watt.boxingknockout wrote:Right - so Adam Smith, the Sky Goblin and Johnny Nelson are Boxing's recognisable faces???!!banjo wrote: That does happen, a bunch of ex-pros saying stuff like "he should've tested the keeper there" or "Your Rooneys, your Messis, your Chelseas, your Barcas" or my old favourite "No disrespect to Palace/Sunderland/Burnley" before going and disrespecting them. I can tolerate him doing a bit of presenting or interviewing, if he really wants some screen time, but he's toxic in the commentary booth and he spoils the show.fizzjambo wrote:Adam Smith is the only boxing commentator that I genuinely can't sit through. I have no idea of your point. But at least the latter are ex pros and also not not regular presenters just 'colour commentators'banjo wrote:Yep as are Froch, Moore and Smith as were McCrory and Watt.boxingknockout wrote:Right - so Adam Smith, the Sky Goblin and Johnny Nelson are Boxing's recognisable faces???!!banjo wrote: That does happen, a bunch of ex-pros saying stuff like "he should've tested the keeper there" or "Your Rooneys, your Messis, your Chelseas, your Barcas" or my old favourite "No disrespect to Palace/Sunderland/Burnley" before going and disrespecting them. 'At least the latter are ex-pros'
That's what I'm saying, it means feck all, look at all the ex-pro footballers who work as pundits, they're absolute plonkers when it comes to talking about the sport, just because you've been there and done it doesn't make you qualified to be an expert on it. If you want an informed analysis of any sport then you need a journalist who specialises in that sport and can come up with something more enlightening than "he should have done better there"
The point I'm making is in response to the original post I quoted which was - Imagine them putting someone who knows absolutley nothing about the premier league on soccer saturday? The country would be in uproar, its bullshit,us boxing fans get a raw deal from every angle from sky
They do put people who know nothing about the premier league on soccer saturday.

Sayin that actually, sky used to have ian darke doin boxing commentary and football commentary, thats says it allboxingknockout wrote:Great point. And that's one of the reasons boxing is a sideshow. Re: Sky's Adam Smith
Everyone has been complaining about Smith for years but obviously he has some serious influence there, if he hasn't been got rid of now, he never will be. However if Sky went bust tomorrow, I guarantee no other broadcaster would give him a job.
His defenders say he is a nice man and now loves the game (I don't think he had ever seen a fight before he started).
No one has ever accused him of doing the job competently though.

Re: Sky's Adam Smith
Isn't there some fabled footage of Smith sparring? I remember it being talked about on here. Now that is something I'd like to see, that and the time Naz made him cry.

the whole cast of sky boxing are creeps, Smith of course, but all the others like Nelson and the scousers and mancs do the same, sucking up to Smith to keep their paychecks, even though I'm sure most of them view the chinless wonder Adam Smith with contempt ( Paul Smith clearly does ) i'ts a real shower of shite

Re: Sky's Adam Smith
The worst part of every sky show is when Smith announces that Rooney has tweeted about the boxing and reads it out.
Then mentions Rooney used to box a bit.
You can hear the erection in his voice.

Smith is a proper not-right.
Re: Sky's Adam Smith
Don't understand why so many still don't think Adam Smith has earned his spurs. He's been working in the sport for ages now and is as switched on as they come. I rate him.

Re: Sky's Adam Smith
You're referring to Jimmy Magee in Ireland. He is seen as a legend in sporting circles in Ireland but he is pushing on a bit and some of his commentary for Dunne's fights was cringeworthy. However, RTE's boxing analysis on a whole is very good. Dunne has even stepped into the pundit role and is excellent. That's when they show a bit of boxing of course.Autobarn wrote:did you ever hear them in Ireland almost foaming at the mouth, losing all perspective when Bernard Dunne fought? Or the Aussies, when Green or Mundine were fighting terrible opposition for IBO titles? I've seen the bottom of the barrel and that is definitely it, not Sky Sports.lefty wrote:That's like saying Dog poo is worse than Cat poo. Re: Sky's Adam Smith
Some interesting point here. There should be more of divide between te broadcaster and the promoter. Sky pull the strings though and they want PPVs that sell. Eddies only PPV freighter is Joshua. He only fights 3 times a year. That leaves about 3-5 more date to fill. Sky know Haye sells ans they know exactly his numbers. So it was a no brainer from them. Eddie just does the donkey work. Thing is, Eddie has to rely on Haye, or other promoters to fill these dates or he has to throw his guys in the deep deep end (golovkin v brook). It's a worrying trend.
Also, Smith and Robinson, who are fans of the sport must cringe that they have to tow the company line when they know 100% this is a mismatch. A terrible, synical fight where Tony Bellew has every excuse possible if he loses and still keeps his world title. Hearn has to realise though even at this late stage of Hayes career he can punch and he will ko Bellew. He could be knocked out bad. Is it worth it?
Sky just can't compete with the American broadcasters. They don't have the finesse or the vision. Watch BT come into the sport. They will show how to present and package a broadcast.

He's shite - his commentary is awful, totally one-eyed, loud, grating, unnecessarily verbose, and irritatingly hyperbolic. He sounds like douglas hurd being fisted by sonny liston.
Re: Sky's Adam Smith
I've always maintained that Adam Smith and Sky have done more long lasting damage to boxing than any other individual or party in the country.
