Evils of modern boxing

Post by ValMar »

1. Corrupted judges and referees
2. Too many belts
3. Too many weight divisions
4. Possibility of catch-weights
5. Greedy promoters

I have been following boxing more than 40 years. Unfortunately, I can not predict the bright future for my favourite sport. Sadly, but I can not see the way to save boxing. I consider five aforementioned items as the worst danger for boxing. I would like to see your opinions.

The older generation of any era has always spelled doom for the future of the sport, probably because its always getting further away from the model they first knew, but the sport always survives with the support of the younger generations who will more easily accept the modern ways/flaws of the sport

And I don't think it took too long before there was sometimes more than one claimant for a world crown

Maybe, I am wrong, but I don't remember any obvious robbery on the highest level (1970-2000).
There is a lot of robberies in last three years, no need to list them.........

Ali-Norton was close, but not obvious robbery at all, Holmes-Spinks too, etc. etc.

Greedy promoters are biggest evil.
I see another problems:
1. Too much money for maybe 3% of top boxers
2. Little money for 97% boxers

1 & 5 have been around forever. 3 is the biggest problem IMO.

4 never really bothered me that much. If 2 camps agree on a catchweight..let them fight.

The cards and the PPV cards are atrocious. Decades ago, Monzon and Ali may defend on the same card. Leonard and Homes may defend on the same card and many weren't in a theater or PPV. That creates interest.

There were robberies all the time. They just usually got a rematch and top fighters were much more active so there wasn't as much of a microscope. YouTube Tyrone Everett vs Alfredo escalera sometime. A Philly fighter, fighting in Philly pitches a virtual 15 round shutout and loses.i gave hagler 12 rounds against Antuofermo, hearns was robbed in the Leonard rematch, etc...

You managed to find a pair of doubtul fights; OK, it had happened, but seldom. Nowadays, it is usual practice, every honest fan ought to admit this fact.

Do you want to make excuses for current corrupted judges ? You have mentioned some cases I had no idea about them, it is my fault, of course.
But, recently, "decision by robbery" is becoming quite acceptable for majority of domestic fans - in Germany, USA, UK, Russia...Sad...... :verysad:

Why would I make excuses? Damn dude, why are you so stubborn? It's always been that way, your point is correct that it's a big problem. Just not a modern specific one. I watched hundreds and hundreds of shit decisions during that timeframe.

One thing I'll say is that the house fighters got screwed too. That almost never happens now.

OK, we will agree about a big problem....And, I can not see the way to destroy this danger/evil......I am a genuine boxing fan, like to see competitive fights and fair judging, regardless of fighters' race/ethnicity...

Honestly, would you like to see catch-weight match for HW championship with limit of 205 ? Honestly, please.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Judging has sucked for over a century. The best thing they could do for the incompetent part of it is put them in a soundproof room with a big screen TV and witnesses to make sure they're not discussing their cards. That eliminates the different angles and the fact that the tv view is vastly superior to ringside seats. For the corruption? They could pay them more I guess.
