2016 fighter of the year

Post by Cent0089 »

IMO Lomachenko should be fighter of year. He has only 2 fights in 2015 but it was very impressive: He KTFO world champ and then he beat most dangerous guy in division and made him look like a b class brawler

Crawford win over Postol was impressive too, but fighting Lundy and Molina is a bit disgrace for fighter of his caliber

Frampton got a win over Quigg and Santa Cruz, but it was a close fights

1) Ward - Kovalev, Brand
2) Frampton - LSC, Quigg
3) Lomachenko - Walters, Martinez
4) Crawford - Postol, Molina, Lundy
5) Pacquiao - Bradley, Vargas

Frampton for me. beat the better opposition. Unifying super bantam against an unbeaten world champion in he's back yard and then moving up and beating an unbeaten FW in the states :TU:

Lomachenko and Frampton are the obvious choices.
Yamanaka perhaps deserves a mention (UD12 Solis, TKO7 Moreno) - Both of those were fun fights, against top level competition
Knockout CP Freshmart (UD12 Carlos Buitrago and UD12 Byron Rojas) deserves a mention too.

But they are honorary mentions only.

I voted Lomachenko from the list. The win over Walters and the way it was done is the best performance of the year from anyone on that list.

I would go Kovalev though. Pascal is a good fighter and Kovalev pasted him. The win over Ward was absolutely top notch (I will never accept that as a loss, it wasn't).

Golovkin's win over Brook was top notch also.

Pacquiao needs to be an option. Everyone thinks of him as past his prime, but he beat Bradley and Vargas decisively this year. That's as impressive a year as anyone had.

On paper, it would have to be Ward. However, the actuality of the fight should not really warrant him that title. It was too close, which most believe Kov won, and was ugly. I believe Lomachenko should get it. His ultra dominate performance over a top notch, undefeated fighter in Walters, alone, is enough to afford him that title.

Bradley & Vargas > Walters & Martinez

The more I think about it, the more clear it becomes to me that Pacquiao had the best year out of anyone. The only reason people think otherwise is because he didn't do anything shocking. People expected him to win his fights decisively, and he did.

Yup good point. Loma's win over Walters is devalued a little given he was out for a year and his performance showed.

I'd be prepared to give it to Kovalev or Ward but the result of their fight wasn't satisfying. Ward lost imo but Kovalev never finished him out and lost the 2nd half of the fight.

Lomachecnko will be fighter of the year for many years in years to come, just as Pacquiao has already had his moments, so would give Frampton the nod this year as he's beaten the best out there for now just needs beat Selby and Rigo if he's to better that next year.

The winner of Parker v Ruiz should get serious consideration, or at minimum an honorable mention. It will be Parker's 5th fight of the year, including Takam, Dimitrenko, and now the undefeated Ruiz. It will be Ruiz's 4th fight and defeating the undefeated Kiwi should get him consideration.

Even if Parker crushes Ruiz, I don't think you can give FOTY to a guy who went 5-0 against 3 total scrubs and a couple of decent B-level fighters. FOTY should be reserved for guys who fought the elite of their division.

If you had to give it to a HW it should probably be Joshua. He only went 3-0, but against better competition than Parker.

I think that he should get an honorable mention for staying busy, but if Ruiz upsets Parker, he should get serious consideration, though I still think that Ward, Frampton or Pac will win it.

I would have said Frampton had he won both fights in a more convincing manor. Got to give it to Lomachenko based on the end result of the Martinez fight and making Walters give up

Frampton for me.

He beat the better opposition, both unbeaten, on their home turf and he wasn’t the overwhelming betting favourite for his bouts (in fact one of them he was even a slight underdog).

Now if the question being posed was something along the lines of "who looks more impressive?", I may have favoured the Ukrainian fighter (since it's easier to look "better" than your FOTY rivals when faced with easier challenges), but I like to respond to thread titles honestly and objectively.

I think Frampton is a solid choice, but I also think:

Bradley + Vargas > Santa Cruz + Quigg

And add on the fact that Pacquiao's victories were more emphatic.
