They DID fight in their primes and Tubbs won on points????shyguy wrote:who wins ? .
Also fought each other about seven times as amateurs and by all accounts were all close fights, I think Tubbs came out on top in that series to.
I imagine it was Tubbs extra speed that gave him the edge.

Like KOJOE says, they did fight and Tubbs won on points. But if both were at their absolute best, I would say Greg would win. In the amateurs, I've always heard and been told that they fought around seven times, with Greg either winning all or six out of seven. In a recent interview, he admitted that Tony was something to deal with, and that he didn't always train as hard as he could've for some of their matches ( a sign of future things to come). Greg also admitted that Mitch Green was pretty tough to deal with.

..the alp has hit it on the nose...which is more than either of the fighters did. i remember tubbs hitting his hands together as if to say "come on and fight" and obviously being relieved that page didn't repsond to the challenge.
of course, the thread's title itself is a problem....as neither page nor tubbs probably never had a prime.....unless you count the tons of prime roast beef tubbs trained on.

The Witherspoon - Tubbs fight was worse I think. 15 rounds of absolutle boredom...or was the Tubbs - Page bout 15 rounds as well?Ambling Alp wrote:The Tubbs-Page fight was arguable the most boring heavyweight title fight of alltime. Almost nothing happened at all. Just a couple of fat guys waiting to throwing a punch and clinching.

The eighties as a whole in the heaveyweight division lacked exiting opponents, far to many boreing fighters and fights to name. The frustrating part is that most of those guys showed a lot of potential and with a little training could have made it the most exiting and dynamic heavyweight division of any era. But it was not to be. Thank God for the featherweights.
