Post by Palais »

Brother of Pat McMurtry's.
According to a ring mag article, he made his pro-debut vs Ken Haas, the night brother Pat KO'd Earl Atley in Seattle, WA, Jul. 21, 1959.
Indication is that he won a six-round "with his hands down" (Pat).
It can't be anything but a decision win? Please, CONFIRM!!!
A few days later he had a brain operation and his fighting days was over.

Winning "hands down" would mean he won the fight rather easily. Having a brain operation shortly after would also confirm that he should have kept his hands up.

Mike got out of the Marines with a 214-7 amateur record, including college boxing (Gongaza University and Idaho State). The only guy who stopped him was future Olympic hwgt Champion Pete Rademacher.
A neurologist tapped his spine and found a blood clot. (After the pro debut)
If boxing didn't do the brain damage, fighting his brother Pat probably did.
Says Pat; "He could fight. He couldn't knock a wh..re of a pisspot, but he could box your ears off. But if I hit him with one left hook, it was Goodnight Irene".
Ironically, after Pat was ko'd in one by Eddie Machen, he had five electro-encephalograms (brain wave tests) and failed them all, ending up with brain damage on the left side.
Mike kept his winning hands up against all opponents, but probably not high enough against brother Pat?
So, a six rounds points decision, right.
Thanks Robin!
